Put a lot of black oats and wheat in with it in some new fields last fall. What is your opinions on it. Let it ride, spray with clethodim and 24d-b or bushhog. What's the pros and cons?

My experience is that you will get more turkey use of the field during the season if you kill the small grains. If you don't spray, the grain gets too tall for the turkeys and will limit their use of it somewhat. However, if you leave it and the small grains mature, the grain can provide a source of early summer food for them.

I used to spray mine, but now I plant enough clover only patches that the turkeys have plenty of places without it. Whether you spray or not should probably depend on how much clover you will have available. If I just had a few deer plots with some clover, I would probably spray them. Good luck with it!

I haven't ever used anything except clethodim for that sort of spraying. It will kill the small grains without hurting the clover.

It's been so long since I used it that way that I don't remember. I use 8 to 10 oz per acre when spraying chufas and that always works ok. If you put it out now while the grain is relatively short I would think that would be enough. The taller it gets, the more it will probably take.

I'd suggest looking at the label or talking to someone with more recent experience. Maybe someone will come along in this thread soon

spray, my opinion is you will get more benefit from the clover than the grain produced. just my 2cts

I’m going to spray Clethodim over my clover plot to eliminate nurse crop grains. Normally I plant the plot in cereal grains and top see crimson clover heavily for the turkeys. Then, before turkey season I will lightly disc to turn everything over and set back the growth of the grains and keep them from getting too tall during the season. Last year, all this did was draw in hogs that pushed off the turkeys.

This year I will skip the discing and spray instead. Could I come in a week or so before the season and spray or could I do it earlier?

12 ounces of clethodim per acre with 0.5 ounces per acre non-ionic surfactant.

Spray grass before it gets tall. Clethodim is slow to kill so the earlier the better. It usually takes a few weeks to get a good kill on a thick stand of grass.

Thanks Squeaky, I was thinking we had upped the formula a little for this job. And clethodim is slow to work any time, and will be even slower this time of year. The sooner the better for those that want clean clover patches by the opener.

I think label max is 16 oz per acre. Squeaky's recc. is spot on.
