Never lost a deer with either caliber X I don't know how many I could not possibly count the number of deer, pigs, and assorted other critters my wife and I have dropped with a .270 or a 7mm-08, but it's a bunch. Has to be over 2 dozen with just those two calibers. To date, we have owned at least 8 rifles in one or the other, and I know where all of those rifles live today. Great rifles are like great kids. You always know where they are if you helped train them.

I wanted to like the 7-08, but had too many tote one off without exits. Found every deer I shot with it but there was always that scenario in the back of my mind. Went back to .30 caliber after that trial run.
Speaking of .270. The most beautiful and smoothest rifle I’ve ever owned, or seen, was in .270. Saved a long time out of high school and purchased a Sauer and Sohn S202. To this day I regret selling that gun… Killed a good bit of deer with that gun and can’t remember having any issues.
Not a lick of difference between the .270 and 7-08 other than short vs long action.
I have never lost a deer with a 7mm-08. No qualifiers needed. It may be the perfect caliber for animals 250 lbs or less, 300 yards or less. I play with a bunch of rifles and calibers, but I have never felt undergunned when I was carrying a 7mm-08. I feel the same about a 270 Win, and a dozen other calibers.

I shoot a 7-08 and have noticed that the poly tipped bullets don’t leave an exit wound most of the time. But most of my deer drop right there. Shot one a little high last day of season and he went about 20 yards and ran into a tree. He was going so fast he broke his leg in several pieces when he hit the tree. Never had one break a bone running into a tree.

A good cup and core bullet in either caliber is all that's needed for whitetail deer. Add a partition or a Barnes for anything else and you will never have an issue
