You don't see many lists of the tariffs imposed against the USA by other countries, but automobiles are heavily tariffed by nations who are supposedly our allies. Ever been to another country and wondered why you don't see any Chevrolets on the road? This is the reason. Info like this is hard to get, but Grok makes it available to anyone. Here's a list of a few of the tariffs against USA automobiles:
India 60% Brazil 35% China 15% Russia 21% Viet Nam 70% Argentina 35%
The EU and the UK have a 10% tariff, but they also have a value added tax (VAT) applied to all American vehicles. The totals are as follows:
UK 30% Germany 29% France 30% Italy 32% Hungary 37% Sweden 35%
In addition, each country has all sorts of other taxes that add to the total. The USA before Trump this year had a 2.5% tariff. The result is that the rest of the world has been free to sell their vehicles here for a very minor 2.5% tariff, while we are totally noncompetitive in selling in other countries. Multiply this over every industry and you can see why our manufacturing base is gone. If this doesn't change, our grandchildren will live in the poverty of the 3rd world, and that's exactly what the globalists want to happen.
Canada is a special case, and they have all sorts of outrageous tariffs against us. NAFTA moved a lot of our auto manufacturing there and that did away with those tariffs, but here's examples of others still in effect:
Milk 270% Butter 298% Chickens 258% Sausage 70% Copper 48% Aluminum 24%
Those are just a few examples. A complete list is really hard to find.
Most of the world is going to fight against Trump as he tries to level the playing field and give us a fair chance to compete. I don't know if he can do it or not, but I'm thankful that we have a president who understands what is at stake and is willing to try to fix it.
All the labor of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.

I believe it's a dangerous game. There are some restrictive markets like Japan that very strictly limit imports. You rarely see an American car in Japan and they are very expensive if you buy one. Definitely room for balancing trade there with them. Other markets can easily get into a counter-tariff war that will increase inflation.

Rumors of Trump capitulating a little I’d guess the market response wasn’t too good There will be pain now or later. Guess we will see.
