They were a useless, agenda driven, right hand of the DNC. Good riddance.

Dept of Ed might be the biggest waste of money in Washington DC and that's saying something.

This will likely still be in Court when I retire in 4 years. I'm mixed on this one only because I worry about how our State will budget and run Education without Federal funds. A lot to digest here. Not to say I'm against it at all but I would like to see a plan and vision at the State level before I decide where to stand. I will say some of the Federal mandates to Schools have been the worse ideas I have seen over the last 20years in Education. My cooperating teacher 20 years ago was retired and told me then to get out of this crap and do something constructive because laws and bureaucrats are killing the profession. Almost every thing he told me would happen came true. My kid wants to be a teacher and I told her she is crazy. Do as I say, not as I did.

Not sure how true, but I thought I saw something today that said 85% of school funds come from the state to begin with. I'm guessing it's gonna be ok.

Cut out the Dept of Edu. Set a maximum % of admin/teachers per state for the state to receive federal funds, and teachers would make more $$.

I pay about $3k/year to homeschool two. It was half that but I went to an accredited curriculum for high school. One of my kids is a year ahead. It's not that he's a genius. Most curriculum is just that dumbed down that switching from hard homeschool classical curriculum to one of the best online schools showed they were a year advanced. The other child could have done the same. We didn't know how things were in the wild because we always homeschooled.

If my taxes were cut by $3k because the failed government school experiment was abandoned, I could invest that money instead. Just indexing would make college close to free. Actually without government grants and loans inflating tuition rates, I'll wager it would be free.

Get the F out of the BATFE. The F is guaranteed by the US Constitution. Those other letters are not.

I'm guessing they're talking about the "front line" (actual classroom teachers) vs bureaucrats

Big difference between a teacher and a textbook operator/daycare worker.

Bingo! When you fail as a teacher the system solves that problem by "promoting" you out of the classroom and into an administrative position, seldom if ever, by firing the teacher. A system can get by doing this on occasion but when it has become the norm the system fails. That is exactly what we are seeing in our state and our society. Teaching is a way of life for my family and only one took an administrative position and is still in it and that was up here in a great system. The rest have all chosen to stay in the classroom or one that retired from administration and went back to the classroom where she is much happier. By an administrative position, I'm not necessarily talking about Principal etc., but the made up ones such as Director of Student Learning Advancement, stuff like that. I do know of positions even being created for bad teachers just for the purpose of getting them out of the classroom.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Indeed, if they eliminate the DOE they can send the states even more money. If it comes without all the strings attached, it could even be helpful.

Education was always supposed to be a function of the states. Eliminating the DOE would be a great first step in returning it to the way it's supposed to be.
