Are there any tactics and tips that you can share for hunting turkeys in the afternoon?

Turkeys are much quieter in the afternoon in my area. Ambush is probably the best tactic and I don't hunt that way. If you get one to gobble, take off the safety because he is coming.

Again showing my lack of experience, I thought you were also was trying to ambush a turkey. Guess I do not understand the meaning of that tactic.

They’ll often be in shady areas around field edges or open hardwoods. You don’t have the assistance of darkness to get close, so you have to slip quietly and scan a lot with binos. Listen for scratching. A bird that gobbles up in the day is usually ready to die and will in a hurry, so don’t hesitate to get in position very quickly.

Here

All you need is a timed corn feeder, a pop up blind, a full flock of decoys and a crossbow.

To me an ambush is not interacting with the bird. You know where they are going and set up like you are deer hunting. Most often guys that hunt that way will be sitting in a ground blind, watching decoys and calling every 30 minutes.

The back and forth with the bird answering the call is why I hunt turkeys. Calling a bird to you is not an ambush.

walk around, call, strike a turkey, and go kill him.

Last year I hunted 3 afternoons after work and 2 mornings in Alabama. Went 3 for 3 in the afternoons, and they all gobbled.

So if you set up with decoys and call every 30 minutes and a gobbler comes in how do you know if you called him to you or not?

If a bird comes in silent to your calls at 7:30 in the morning do you let him walk?

Can’t remember ever setting up decoys and calling every 30 minutes. Simply not a problem. I will shoot a silent bird that comes in. Those birds are not the reason I have been up since 3 this morning. The adrenaline comes with interacting with a gobbling bird. If you don’t understand then I can’t explain it to you. They sell Butterball turkeys at the grocery store every day!!!!!

I get the adrenaline so I do understand it. I also get adrenaline when one comes in silent.

Pro tip… sleep closer to them so you don’t have to get up so early šŸ˜‚

Some times the thrill comes from killing a silent bird that has been around the block several times.

Struck a bird at 4 today. Youth pulled the trigger at 4;30 after passing up 5 jakes this morning. Maybe afternoon hunting isn't so bad.

To be totally honest the most effective way to hunt small tracts of land is in a blind using decoys. To each his own. I am blessed with the opportunity to be able to hunt them the way I want. Really don't care how anyone else hunts.

I hear ya Fishduck. I would much rather they come in gobbling and strutting, but if one comes in silent he gonna die too.

I've prolly killed 100 birds in the afternoon. If he gobbles I can usually kill him.....

I love to hunt the afternoons, get on a hillside you know they like to roost, gobble sparingly, scratch leaves every so often.
