Anyone done their own in-ground pool from a kit? We are wanting a "shallow" pool, 4' deep or so. I have access to equipment to dig the hole, move the dirt and spread it. Any thoughts?

When I worked in that business, the dealers would sell the pool kits to customers. That's been a while.

I've seen where folks have made them out of shipping containers and they were pretty damn cool.

I've also seen folks build them out of cinder blocks.

Facebook marketplace looks to always have some fiberglass pool shells for what seem to be pretty decent prices.

Ive been tossin the idea around myself because my wife wont let the pool thing go…i hate above ground pools…but j like nice in ground pools..they can add some value if they are maintained well. I might would go the fiberglass route or just do a big plastic stock tank or pela be easy to plumb..just getchy a pump..wont be super huge but it will be sufficient i do believe.

I've had one.........I'll never have one again. If I were looking to buy a house, an existing pool would be a negative. If I ever did it again, it would be one of those temporary, inflatable pools that's about 15' across and 4' deep. Put it up in May(ish), take it down in Oct(ish). Usually last a few years if taken care of, then replace if/when needed.

Digging the hole is one thing but what about all the plumbing and electrical?

So what you're saying is, you've got too much money and too much time on your hands? I've watched this go down a.couple times. I'm in favor for the entertainment factor.

Both times they dug a hole. They had a big muddy hole for several months before filling it back in. The next year they paid someone to do it. Years later, one of them still has the pool.

I pay for a private club membership for swimming.

I’d rather not have a pool than a DIY one.

Hmm, maybe an above ground pool would be better for a DIY project.

I put ours in and have helped put a few others in. We did a 18x36 liner pool and didn’t cut any corners for half of what we were quoted. I paid the guy to dig the hole that I bought the kit from and also paid a guy to do the bottom. You will need help with the walls and a little with the plumbing. You will need some knowledge of the electrical or hire someone. Ours is salt and pretty much maintenance free other than the leaves during the winter.

I hate a pool. It’s an invitation for unwanted guest on the weekends. Next thing you know is I’m cooking for 20 instead of 3. Then I’m cleaning up after. You wanna swim? The ocean is 5 miles away.

A good buddy of mine put his own in, it took him a few months but said he'd do it again.

DIY and swimming pool should never be in the same sentence together.

Maybe DIY Pond, or DIY mosquito farm, but not DIY swimming pool in the traditional sense.

I used to work at a pool store when I was a teenager and helped put in a few……Not saying it cant be done but its definitely something where you would want to know what you’re doing and know the tricks of the trade or you’re likely to end up having problems

A buddy of mine did it and it turned out amazing. So well that it had me considering doing it when I built mine. I ended up contracting it out to a pool builder and I’m thankful I did.
