Years ago i met an old man that had a hawk trap on his property. Think 4x4x4' box with two 2x4' spring hinged one way doors on the top. All wrapped in chicken wire. He would catch a live squirrel or rabbit in a box trap and put it in there. Bird dive bombs threw the top, gets the bait and is stuck in there. So the doors swung one way into the trap and the bird just tried to dive bomb in the doors? Correct. The bird dive bombs the live squirrel and goes āthruā the wood framed chicken wire doors and they snap back behind him.

I āknewā a guy a while back that had a rabbit pen that he ran/trained beagles in. It was probably 30 acres and he had a live trap on EVERY wooden fence post. He wreaked havoc on every kind of avian predator. He didnāt put up with anything killing his rabbits.

Can they not just do the burns earlier, before nesting?
Burning isnāt always that easy. You are completely at the mercy of the weather and local conditions. Burn practitioners donāt have the luxury of scheduling burns to specific days or even weeks in most cases. You get them done when you can. For a private landowner with the ability to burn themselves, sure. They donāt have as much to do. For someone with 25-30 burns on the schedule for a burn season, no. It gets done when it gets done. And, timing of burns helps achieve other objectives too. Turkeys are not always the forefront of those decisions. For deer browse and hardwood control, growing season fires are the best. Dormant season fires really donāt accomplish much for wildlife. They reduce fuels. Growing season fires however, promote herbaceous growth and help control unwanted species. Iāve NEVER once seen turkey populations suffer from growing season fires on the landscape, unless it was an uncontrolled intense fire that destroyed everything living over a vast amount of acreage. Matt has covered the bases well, as usual! We are 7,500 acres into a 14,000 acre burn season. Burned today in 20 + mph winds. We will still be getting burns done in May, maybe june. ALL our places we burn are wildlife oriented and have good - great turkey habitat and populations. burning up a nest doesn't concern me. Giving the turkeys burned habitat does.
I swear by my life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine

Also to add, a lot of burning right now is also occurring in areas that turkeys absolutely will not nest in. I have a burn scheduled that hasnāt seen fire in probably a decade with leaf litter so thick that thereās no understory growth to provide any sort of nesting cover whatsoever. Once you get a tract on the right rotation you also decrease the likelihood of burning up nests- but once again, benefits far outweigh the risks Well hey Brae. Glad to have you on the forum. I have enjoyed you in the podcast, but we need to discuss the company you keep! š Thanks for putting your opinions out there. They carry a lot of weight. You will be a legend here in no time.
