This is what I was thinking. Trailer jack has a square base about that size and if not cranked up enough it could cause this. Also it would be centered in road which is where this rut is located.

That is what they look like. Natchez trace studies have way too much to look at about them. But Farm mule wagon tracks became almost like rail tracks overtime so folks would not get stuck.
