Just had the implant on Fri done. Boy it was not a simple as I read or thought. 3+ hr surgery and I have a 4 inch gash under my chin mid way down neck and another on my chest. Swelling is still quite big and very painful to swallow still (think this is from intubation); but dang did it throw a wrench into my turkey hunting plans. I am hoping it is all over after the 4 weeks until it gets activated. Anyone else have any results? I will update as I get closer to getting it titrated and activated sometime in May; post surgery pics were pretty awful.

I tend to be a bit more cautious about new stuff that could have potential to go wrong. If I eventually have it done, it will be several years down the road after it proves to be very safe and more effective than a cpap. If I truly needed it, I'd have it tomorrow.

I guess it's a bit like the gastric bypass and the lap band surgeries. No, I haven't had either although some may consider me overweight enough to be a candidate. When both procedures were a new thing, they were hailed as the best thing since sliced bread. Over time there were a lot of success stories, but there were also a lot of not so successful stories and many that actually had to be reversed, lap band anyway. Can't undo gastric bypass.

It is a neurostimulator attached to the glossal nerve.

It could limit your imaging options as far for MRI for the rest of your days.

If you have it removed make sure they remove the leads for it also not just the Implant

I have had many patients not pleased with inspire and other implanted neurostimulators

A word of advice. All these nerve stimulators usually work pretty well, but doctors seem to like to jack up the stimulation. If you think in terms of a Ten's unit and you turn it up until you twitch, and leave it, you will eventually stop twitching. It seems to me the concept is similar.

I saw this with my ex's son, who had a vegas nerve stimulator. Worked great at the installed setting, they kept jacking it up and over time it didn't seem to work as well. There is only so much more they can turn it up. So really good seizure control at the low setting. After 2 years, and a higher setting, not so much. It was a game changer for him at first.

My dad has some kind of stimulator that is supposed to help with incontinence. He's having to go back with it too. They did the same thing. Implant it and then start jacking up the stimulation.

I have several friends that have one and love it. I work in the medical field and talked with one of my anesthesiologists about it.

I also talked to the local rep and she told me which doctor to use at UAB (best at implantation). Where did you have the procedure done?

I hope it'll work great for you. I didn't realize it had been around that long. I only heard about it a few years ago. Thank you for serving.
