I’m newish to the CPAP. Diagnosed with mild sleep apnea, almost no sleep apnea. Wanted to try a CPAP to see if it made a difference in day time energy levels and deeper sleep. I’ve had it since November and have had good results. The only issue I have is that I have to sleep with my mouth taped shut. If I don’t, the CPAP will blow my mouth open and wake me up with air coming out and a dry mouth. I mentioned it to my doctor and they just kind of shrugged it off. Anyone run into this and have solutions? I really don’t mind the CPAP, but taping my mouth shut is getting old.

Does your mask have a chin strap? If not, I'd try one that does.

No it does not. I’ll have to try that. I tried a chin strap that goes over my head and under my chin like one would and I still had the issue. My jaw isn’t dropping down as much as my lips are being blown open.

Get a mask that covers both mouth and nose.

I have same issue, mask solved it.

Do you have a mask that covers your nose and mouth? Sounds like you have the one that just goes under your nose. If it's not a "full face" mask, you might want to look into one. I have the one that just goes under the nose and thought I'd have major issues (I breathe through my mouth due to severe sinus issues), but I've had very little trouble adjusting to breathing through my nose.

This is the mask that I have...

You may need a mask something like this...that way if your mouth does come open, you're still getting the air

I’ll add the nose and mouth combo to the list. Need to call my supplier and request one.

I absolutely couldn't stand the Darth Vader mask. Once I changed to just a nose piece life became good

I have the exact one in the top pic. I’ve actually sent that pic to people. I’ve had zero issues from day one. I will say that if I drink too much and not put it on, feel like run over cow sshhiitt the next day.

The only difference the cpap makes for me is it wakes me up 3 or 4 times a night. I can’t tell if I sleep better but I dang sure don’t sleep as much.

Park your tongue behind your top front teeth and use it to block the blowout via your mouth. With time, it won’t seem so bad. Using a chin strap too might help.

I fought with masks forever until I found the one. It's an under the nose with just a single strap going around the back of my head. I couldn't deal with all the multiple straps or having my mouth covered, the mask just never sealed right. I have the opposite of you, it makes me clench my teeth down to keep from blowing out my mouth so now I also use a mouth guard at night, something you might could try b/c having the mouth guard in might make you keep your mouth shut. I'm a sexy beast when I climb into bed!

My nose is stopped up half the time, so a full face mask is what I use.

There's no mask that you use that will be an instantly comfortable if you haven't been running a c-pap before. And while there are masks you will prefer more than other it just takes time to get used to it. But once you get used to it you won't sleep without it.

They gave me one for “mild” sleep apnea and it was the worst sleep in my life for a few weeks, due to waking up with drool all in my beard.

I ditched it and lost weight and my snoring went away.

I’m not overweight and have snored since college, so that won’t work for me.

Thanks for the input everyone.

I use the ResMed f40. Had severe sleep apnea and hadn't slept good in years. Best sleep of my life when I got it all dialed in.
