Has anyone tried running water or solvent based paint through a hand held pump sprayer like a Solo ? Is it possible to thin it enough to flow but still get decent life ? Want to avoid the mess of a brush and cost of aerosol.

I’m following this. I’ve looked into it and from I can tell the startup costs for the quality sprayer can be high. The mid range priced spray markers all have crap reviews and even the high end ones aren’t great. I’ve almost just conceded to using a brush.

Yeah a Nelson paint gun is going to run over $400. I figure the Solo would be better than a generic sprayer. I’ve done the brush and can deal but would rather avoid the mess. Aerosol would meet the speed efficiency but is cost prohibitive.

I've tried several methods and found easy doesn't last long . A brush and old school oil base lasts longer than anything else I've used. If you thinned down oil base enough , it might just work through a pump up sprayer . Keep us posted if you give it a try.

Not the answer you looking for but we always just duct tape an 18ā€ survey stake to the paint brush and wrap in a bag overnight or throw it away and make another. Wear old clothes but it’s hard not to get it on you

Gallon of oil based paint and brush works well and is the fastest I have used. If you don't want to throw brush away and use the next day put in ziplock bag in fridge until you need it again, works great.

I’ve marked hundreds of acres with tree marking paint from Nelson and a gallon pump up sprayer. I’ve also marked all of our landlines with Nelson boundry paint and a 1 gal pump up sprayer. The Nelson sprayer is useless. A paint bucket and a brush is not handy (at all).
Go to Lowe’s, buy two one gal sprayers with a built in strainer on the bottom of the pick-up hose. Buy a gal of paint thinner also.
If it’s cold you may have to thin it some, but if it’s hot, we didn’t have to thin at all. Pour what you don’t use back in the bucket, pour a cup of thinner in the sprayer and shake until so thin it’s like water. You may have to do this twice. Then run a cup of thinner through the spray wand to clean the wand and pump. I’ve had a sprayer last a month using it 5 days a week. Some just don’t last, that’s why you need a spare. Buy a nice pair of kitchen cleaning gloves for clean up. And a pair of channel locks for when the paint lid sticksā€¦šŸ˜€ if you use Nelson or similar.
I had everything I needed in a 5 gallon bucket (from Lowe’s.

We literally used a pallet of paint one spring through those sprayers.
The nozzle will stop up every now and again but that IS the way to go. We tried the handheld pump up 1/2 gal sprayers but they’re heavy on one hand and most didn’t have the strainer on the pickup line. That’s a must. I think we used champion, Chapman, something like that.

I used 1 gallon of black oil base paint , 1 gallon of water seal, 1 quart gas in a pump up sprayer to paint and waterproof my utility trailer. worked pretty good. do not know how it would work on trees

Paint needs to be shook very well, if you notice there’s chunks in the paint, you can thin it with a small amount of thinner per gallon (shake well). We marked in 30 deg weather and 90deg. I really like Nelson paint. Their jugs and screw on lids are so much better than any gal paint bucket.
