People really need to watch the episode of Mythbusters where they examine reaction times vs distances between a cop and an aggressor. As best I remember it was more to the specifics of a situation involving a knife wielder vs a LEO with a holstered sidearm. But basically anybody inside 18 feet can get to you before you can effectively deploy a secured weapon. It’s very thought provoking to me.

I used to be an instructor and taught this. Also a PPCT(pressure point control tactics). In PPCT the defense against a knife wielding attacker is basically the same as empty hand defense. Get close and knock his ass out. I was teaching the knife defense one day at a Tuscaloosa Armory. One of the newer Officers kept interrupting me so I told him to show me something better. His defense was to fold backwards onto his back and use legs to keep knife away from you. I picked out my fastest officer and let him be the attacker. From 21 feet he slapped the defender across the eyes with his rubber knife as he folded down and back. Defender launched up and back as he was slapped and his head hit the concrete floor like a busting watermelon.He was out of work for several weeks. NOT much of a defense.
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

I never was much of a fan of the bicycle move (falling on your back and kicking your feet like riding a bike). I’ve seen it a few times in MMA fights but usually as a stalling tactic waiting for the end of a round while taking an ass whipping. On the streets there is no bell or end of a round.

I had two different black men rush at me while I had my Mal, Taz. Both me surprised me but not the dog, she stopped both of them 5-6 feet from me. I had her on a 6 foot lead both times.

Watched a lot of YouTube demonstrations of the 21 ft rule. It’s crazy what someone with a knife can do in short order My landlord years ago was deployed to Iraq and spoke of an elite group of knife fighters that wore blue turban nothing he said. Said the local terrorist we’re scared of them
