Well this evening I shot a nine point my biggest by far with a bow and I am having to let him lay overnight. The first shot hit him and he did nt know he was hit when he ran off and just stood there for thirty seconds. So i knocked another arrow and the second one hit him direcly in the shoulder blade. I have great blood and walked up on the deer two hours later, he was laying there with his head up so I backed out and left him.

He will be there.

I know how you feel. I hate having to wait overnight......cant sleep.

If you were able to walk up on him close enough to see him laying and he did not jump and run, then he should be very close by in the morning dead.

Seriously though, you probably did the smartest thing you could do by backing out. A good hunting buddy of mine would have pulled out his buck knife, grabbed him by the antlers, straddled him and cut his throat...but then he got his backside turned black and blue by a buck that rolled over on his back and was kicking him at the speed of blades in a blender. It wasn't pretty and I'm sure my buddy would think once or twice before trying that again.

Legal or not, I would have gone back to the house, gotten a 12 gauge, 5 rounds of 00 buck, and gone back and finished it.

I once trailed a 6 point for a 4 hours and 1 1/2 miles. We jumped it twice, but had nothing to kill it with. We ended up making a spear out of a branch, a knife, and a pull up rope and spearing it to death.

The deer deserve better.

If I thought I could walk back up on it and finish it with a shotgun, I'd do that rather than have it lay all night dying. Legal, no. Ethical, yes.

How far did he go from the 2nd shot to where he was bedded? If he didn't jump up, I'd be there at midnight.

I respectfully disagree with you and here is why.
Granted this happened on Wheeler wildlife refuge,but here is the story.Same thing happened to a young man he trails up the biggest buck of his life deer is down but his head is up.Young man did just as you suggested came back with a gun and dispatched the buck.Takes said buck to local taxidermist and over the next couple months talks about what happened.LEOS hear about it and go to taxidermists and retrieve the cape and horns run a few tests and long story short he lost 1 fine buck and his Refuge rights for yrs.If you would like to see 1 big big 6 pt he is on display at the visitors center on hwy 67 in Decatur

Well I went back this morning while it was raining. He was nt in the same place, I found my second arrow which had about 10 inches of penetration. I did nt find him but did nt look long I will go back after work and find him I hope.

let him lay. the best buck i've ever killed with my bow a nice 8 point. we walked up on him bedded down and we backed out and got our climbers off the trees and took them to the truck came back and he lay dead right there. the more you push them the less likely you are to find them....just MY opinion
