All ive ever shot has been recurves, started out with a 40# ben pearson and moved to a stronger PSE. Never have been to thrilled with it..

So im considering a trade by this summer to a new bow, either another recurve (hoyt) or a compound!! Ive test shot a couple over the past months and have been impressed.

I like the dead on accuracy and spead, but can't stand the weight, and all but one I shot seemed jerky at release as opposed to the recurves..any suggestions?

Compounds Ive shot include Reflex, bear, diamond... of these three I liked the diamond the best. Im still wanting to shoot a hoyt and matthews
Sorry for long post but just my scattered thoughts looking for insight

I recently bought a Hoyt Alpha Max 35 and it is light weight & it is one sweet shooting bow. I am absolutely pleased with the Alpha Max. Hoyt's new bow will be out soon I would take a look @ it, they say it's super nice.

Hey guys,

This is always a tricky question when I am approached with my recommendations. I am not a die-hard (insert bow brand here) kind of person. Each bow brand has their advantages and short fallings, some more than others. I will say that there are some key differences between brands and models but there is one key question you have to ask yourself - "How much do I want to spend?"

There are bows out there that are worth the hefty price tag, and then there are some bows that don't have the price tag but a great value.

Another key question is the available support for that type of bow. Some of these new "beyond parallel" bows will require special presses that not every shop has upgraded to yet.

For myself, I love the speed and accuracy of a Mathews. I like the strength and dependability of a Hoyt. Bowtech (also Diamond - cheaper alternative but still a Bowtech product) have great all around bows with some interesting technology behind it. PSE is making a nice jump into the higher end market with the x-force series. Then you have the smaller, but great bows like Pearson and high Country just to name a few.

This is an important factor to any bow purchase decision. Shoot what your comfortable with!

All the major brands will land you a deer, just look for the features and specs that fit what you want in a bow.

I personally shoot the Mathews Reezen 6.5 and I LOVE this bow. I will say that after setting up a lot of new bows for people and shooting them to get them tuned in. I think if I had to purchase a new bow now, I'd go with the Diamond Iceman.

Duckbuster when did you go to the dark side?

If I purchase a new bow, is it customary for shops to take trade ins? What will be some things to consider with a compound..and what should I expect from the shop as far as set-up/service?

Sorry if these questions are ignorant just never ventured here before

Most shops will do a consignment sell for your old bow - but each shop is different.

Some things that are often overlooked when you buy a new bow and often result in buying "upgrades" later (better to get it as close to right from the start instead of constantly upgrading your accessories).

Sight Size: A lot of people will see the nice bright large pins in a cheaper sight and think it's great. But with some of these new bows, 40+ yard shots are not that uncommon. So a smaller fiber size is always better. I personally wouldn't recommend anything larger than .019

Peep Sight size: Most people just "deal" with whatever peep the shop puts on there. This really isn't the best way to do it. Once you get a solid stance and anchor point, when you look through the peep you should just barely be able to see the sight edges (the round part that protects the pins). If you see too much of it, it'll be harder to get a quick "center" and if you can't see it at all, you'll have a hard time staying consistent with putting the pins in the middle of the peep in the exact same spot every time.

With a high speed bow, pre-think and ask for recommendations on your arrows. Don't be afraid to spend a little extra - it's absolutely worth it. Additionally, if you know you’re going to shoot fixed blades, go for a slight offset fletching (1 deg). If you’re going to use mechanical with little chance them affecting the flight, go with right-Helical.

Get the shop that sets your bow up to agree to verify tune after 4-5 dozen arrows being shot. 99.9% of the time it won't change anything, but it's always better to give the strings time to relax and form before getting a solid tuning.

If you need more info, PM me and I’ll help the best I can and give you some

Go to a shop that has several different brands and then shoot them all and then decide. I just purchased the Hoyt Maxxis and it is super sweet. But, don't ever think you can't buy a good used bow. I traded my AlphaMax for my Maxxis. Lots of 1 year old great bows out there. Call around and see what is on the shelf.
