Just moved into our new house and there are ant beds everywhere!! We have almost an acre backyard and our dog for some reason likes to dig at them and also eat the ant beds lol. I've tried ortho powder, which stinks to high heavens and amdro. Amdro seemed to work some by completely dousing the hill but then they just move. Any of y'all know what the proper way to get rid of them is?
I've heard grits will blow them up, which could be pretty entertaining, though i don't know if that's true or not. Thanks guys! smile

Had some getting in a light switch in my garage and shorting it out. Got some gel from Ace Hardware in a small orange bottle, no ants/blown switch in about a year. Terra? or something similar.

This. Just make sure you spread it outside the mound. Keeps em from running off.

My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

so we "lit em up"...

I'd love to use gasoline on the little suckers but I'd have way to many dead grass patches around my yard by the time i was done.

I've heard taking a bucket or shovel and mixing the piles together will make them fight and kill each other off since each pile has it's own queen. Never tried it but heard it works.

On a serious note, I would be worried about the dog getting into the poison that you put on the ant mounds.

God Bless,

I use Spectracide granules from lowes. I put 3 - 20# bags on my yard a couple times a year and it keeps them away. It is awesome and runs about $10 a bag which is worth it not to have any ants for months at a time.

Find someone with Argentine ants, go park your car in their yard for a day be sure to have a couple of cheeseburgers in your car. Then drive home. The fire ants will be gone forever within 6 months.

Most of the baits on the market take time to work as they are growth regulators. As older ants die, no younger ants replace them and the colony slowly dies. These tend to be more effective than some of the quick working ones because often the colony will move before the queen dies (and in truth she often isn't exposed anyway). There are several good ones, but Amdro is the most known.

If you do the things you need to do when you need to do them then someday you can do the things you want to do when you want to do them.

If you use Amdro again, try sprinkling the granular bait around the outside of the ant bed in a 2-3ft. radius, using a scoop or cup(anything other than you hand). A friend who is an Entomologist for the state once explained the reasoning behind this like this " You go to the store to get your groceries, not on top of the roof of your house, do you?" "Well, neither do ants!" Makes since to me.

I've used Amdro with pretty good results, but it is just as you described here. It sometimes takes 2 to 3 weeks to kill the mound, but gradually it thins them out.
