I have been reading lately about the big green egg. I was watching some vidoes on youtube and a guy said he was going to smoke a brisket at 215 for 17 hours and not touch it during this time.

My question: Can the egg burn this long w/o adding more fuel? If not how do you add fuel w/o disturbing the meat/ grate?

That lump coal will burn FOREVER! I never did a cook that long on mine, but I have no doubt it would do it.

Ya he was using lump charcoal and wood chunks. I thought maybe he could cut down the airflow enough that it would just smolder.

I have done several slow boston butt cooks on my KJ at 215 degrees for 17+ hours on one load of lump. It will do it easy.

I smoked a Boston butt once for 18 hours on mine. I put it on around lunch with plans to take it off before bed time but I fell asleep on the couch and didn't wake up until the next morning. I still had enough lump charcoal on there to of kept going for several more hours. All you do is fill the firebox up completely to the top, get the fire going, then close the top and bottom vents to where there is only about 1/8" opening in each. On mine, at least, this combination will allow it to cook at about 200 degrees and will cook for 18-20 hours easily without ever touching the BGE.

Last weekend I cooked a Brisket for 14 hrs on one half of the Primo (I have a divider and only put charcoal on the off side) and still had charcoal left...

I went 22 hours on a butt cook last year on mine and all I did was set it and forgot it. Fill the fire box up and let her go.
