When I was about 12 me and dad was hunting what he called "Lamarion WMA" Not sure what it is called now, but I had a Model 94 .30-30 and was playing with the hammer and dad had done got on to me about it, so I had taking off the old leather deer head sling and was playing with it, once again dad got on to me. Well I went back to playing with the hammer, but I accidentally cocked all the way back so I decided I would just leave it so dad wouldn't know I was playing with it, well I dozed off and I had two does wake me up, they had walked about ten yards from me and then spooked, well that spooked me and I jumped and the gun went off straight up in the air. Dad was about 30 feet to my left and sorta out of sight but he could still se me. Well when he found out what had happened he whooped the piss out of me with that gun sling. The next two days he gave me two shells and I wasn't allowed to chamber one unless I seen a deer.

An old man that used to hunt the woods at the end of a dead end road on Choccolocca WMA would take an empty whiskey bottle, and set it on his truck in plain sight. It worked moderately well as a deterrent for other hunters. I'm pretty sure that he didn't drink at all. The bottle was only there to give himself a little more real estate to hunt.

Watched a guy at Cahaba WMA set his pop-up blind up in the middle of a green field. It was unbelievable.

H&H wma KY. I was hunting about 200 yds off a big field and right about deer thirty a guy with a flannel shirt, blue jeans, cross bow, and a red cooler of beer show up in the food plot, run 3 does off in the process. Sits on his cooler about 5ft off the wood line and drinks beer and grunts. Every time he finished a beer he would walk about another 10 yds down the edge of the field and set up again. Repeated this for about a 6 pack and then moved on.

I killed a big wide 6 point on Wheeler with a flintlock another hunter shot its leg off as it went by him.

I've never deer hunted on a WMA but have turkey hunted several states on public land. My hats off to anyone who toughs it out on WMA's every year and actually tries to do it right!

Several years ago a friend and I were standing outside our truck in Mo. listening for that first gobble of the morning. We heard a truck coming and as it got to us it stopped and sat there a minute then spins off to the next road. Shortly after they had gone a turkey gobbled REALLY close to the road. He wasn't a hundred yards off the main road and had to be roosted within sight of the trail going into the woods. We circled off the trail and got behind him knowing he was a public land high pressure bird. Well about the time we get set up on him we hear the truck from earlier crank back up and come flying up the road again. The guy drives past our truck again and stops at the next road past us but this time he gets out blowing a REALLY LOUD crow call. I told my friend "See! This is why we circled him to set up!" The turkey is gobbling at everything moving so I was content just waiting for him to fly down before calling. After 20 minutes or so we hear the truck fire up again and here they come back. At this point I'm getting pretty aggravated but am hoping they'll actually run the turkey right over my buddy! This time when they get to our truck they stop again and we hear them slam both truck doors then blow the crow call again! The bird gobbled at them and they actually walk in past our truck blowing the loudest, highest pitch imaginable on that crow call! They walk right under the turkey and send him sailing across the hollow to the next county I believe. Well now I'm way past aggravated! I'm pissed! I jump up and head to the trail trying to cut them off so we could discuss manners but by the time I get to the trail that goes back out to the main road we can hear a truck coming up the trail(a walk in only trail)from behind us and it sounds like it's tearing hell apart getting to us! So up pulls a local and as he jumps out of the truck cussing up a storm at us for scaring off HIS turkey we hear the other truck spin off again and blow the horn twice! The local looks confused at us then and asked if we were the ones blowing the crow call and I told him I hadn't made a sound of any kind all morning! Then he goes into another cussing fit wanting to go run the other truck down but I explain to him there's a locked gate between his truck and the other so he offers us a ride out and when we refuse he spins off headed back the way he came! I looked at my friend asked him if it was really worth all the trouble! It only took us 20 minutes to pack our bags and check out the hotel we were in and be on the road back to Bama!

I had a personal funny moment or for others it's funny. This past Thursday I was drawing back to take a shot at a really nice 8 point at about 35 yards. While drawing back I hear this loud CLANK! I was in shock because it was so unexpected. Well...those NuFletch lighted nocks that I just HAD to have for no reason fell out of the arrow as I was drawing! I've shot them many of times with no such problem but only in the Summer and Fall.

After thinking about it for a while I believe that it was so brutally cold that day to the point that it much have shrunk the plastic nock just enough allowing it to popout as it did.

Needless to say I will no longer be using lighted nocks or at least the NuFletch type. That was the nicest buck I've personally seen at Cahaba. frown

Me and two buddies went on a hunt together at wheeler years ago, we all had two way radios and handles for the each of us, we all decided the deer had shut down for the morning so decided to head back to the truck we all came together in. I met up with one of the friends and we walked back together. While we were waiting on our other buddy,I had to pee really bad so I did this in front of the truck. My friend with me said dang your really did have to go! Pissed a lakeman! So our other buddy comes walking up and my friend with me tells him his truck had leaked alot of fluid out and probably be a good idea if he checked it before we headed out. I just went along with him. Our friend that owned the truck pulls his gloves off, gets down on his knees and puts his hands in the fluid and sticks it to his nose and yells "Yall SOB*%#S yall both walking your AXX's back home". Well guys we didnt get a deer that day but the laughs we had over that will last a lifetim. LOL, I cant wait to get someone with it myself. FUN_EEE

Drove by two guys sitting right in the middle of a green field. They turned, smiled, and waved big as life. I just thought, "at least they are happy." I laughed, but appreciated the good attitudes they had.

I drove past a guy sitting on the side of the road. He had a 7-10 yr old girl sitting between his legs and holding a 12 gauge single shot with the hammer back. Best part is he was wearing an orange life jacket.

Another time we were standing in line about 5am and when we were about 2 people away from the Warden's shack there were 2 rifle shots maybe a mile away. One of the Warden's looked at the other and said, "Somebody's getting an early start", and just kept handing out permits.

Probably 10 yrs ago I was hunting this bird on a local WMA. He had been roosting in a hardwood bowl just off a powerline. I expected him to be in there the next morning so me and buddy got in tight before daylight and got on either side of the bowl, about 100 yds or so apart. Well, as it turns he didn't gobble and wasn't in there that morning. I come out to meet my buddy and he is standing there with a disgusted look on his face. I ask whats up and he points about 20yds away and there is another hunter sitting there with his back to us right on the side of the power line. I asked my buddy if the hunter knew we were there and he said yes. So, I give a little "Hey!", and hold my hands up like WTH? He just turns around, waves, and goes back to deer hunting for turkey. Well, I made sure we walked out and were as loud as possible talking and making noise going back to the truck.

That was some of my first hunting on public land. I learned real quick you don't necessarily hunt where the turkeys are. You work hard and find where the turkeys are deep in heart of the WMA where walking is about the only option. Leave all those frontline turkeys to the local yahoos to play with so you can go hunt in relative peace. About the only hunters I have run across the last 5 yrs or so on public land have been the hardcore types like myself who don't mind burning boot leather. Those are far and few between so no one really damages the hunting in those areas.
