I wake up early in the darkness reluctant to crawl from my sleeping bag.when I do the sting of cold is Instaneous it bites at my face and hands as I try to build my fire for warmth. I heat coffee and fry some bacon as I dream of the day to come. Not a creature stirs in this frost ridden land it's seems all has succumbed to hibernation but me. The firelight dances across the ground revealing what appears to be millions of diamonds encompassing everything. I add a few more logs to the fire as the smell of scorched hickory reaches my nostrils. There's no other place a man can feel so alive as in natures bosom far from the hum and drum of normal life. I sit on my camp stool and sip hot coffee as I ready for the days task. I make my way toward the eastern ridges just as dawn begins to break. I've been here before lots of deer sign in this sanctuary of sorts. The smell of pine is intoxicating I feel I could be back in time maybe 200 years. The forest duff is totally silent as I pick my way uphill my back straining under the pack I have on. I find two huge limestone boulders kicked out by erosion and eons of time. I take a seat listening for the slightest of disturbances. The sun finally peeks over the trees bathing me in warmth and light. A lonesome redtail hawk screams from the valley below as chipmunks dart from hollow logs like little people of the forest. A bobcat moves below me not making a sound almost seeming to defy gravity as he drifts like woodsmoke. No I'm not the only hunter here and I wouldn't have it any other way. Suddenly I hear footfalls coming through the frosty leaves toward me. I ready my bow and wait. Out steps a mature doe in all her glory always on alert. As I watch I can see her breathe streaming from her nostrils like clouds on a hot summer day. I get ready for a shot that I pray is quick and without due suffering but just before I release out jumps a fawn giddy with life. It circles the doe bumping into her having no clue death is near. I let down my bow today I'm no killer just an observer of natures beauty. I watch as they feed on down the ridge I pickup my pack and bow for the long walk back to camp. Before I leave I say a prayer for another day blessed to see the sun rise and another chance at life.

In the overbearing glow of the fluorescent lights in the newly renovated but still homely looking day room of the firehouse I sit patiently scrolling through the numerous posts on aldeer while the television blares in the background. Reluctantly I stumble onto your hunting story whilst I tell the rookie what I would like from the ever tasty eatery known as Taco Bell that is famous for their juicy yet stupendously crunchy tacos and their ooey gooey and cheesy burritos, as I indulge in your story I realize that it is just a small tad too descriptive. wink

Yeah c’mon. Daniel White
