After a couple years of talking about it we have finally decided to go forth with supplement feeding. I'm more or less ignorant about the subject so maybe y'all can help. We plan on running 6 or so feeding stations on roughly 3000 acres. Here's are a few questions that I need help with. I looked in this section and couldn't answer my questions completely.

Best brand supplement for the $$$?
Mix with corn?
What months do you feed?
Any other info tips are appreciated.

I'm sure I'm missing something but this will get me started.

Mix corn in the first few months until they get used to the protein. It's up to you if you continue with the corn. Bucks will tear the protein up once use to it so I would go straight protein. If you aren't going to feed year round I would start in February and quit in October. I don't really know the best brand I'm just going off what I've seen done.

Would walk over a naked woman to get to a gobblin turkey!

Buck Booster

It is a good quality feed that is highly palatable and economical. We have had great luck with it. It will not take long for the deer to prefer it over corn!

We feed year-round. But, we adjust the ratio of pellets:corn according to Seasonal needs.

Usually, by late April/early May, we have them on 75% pellets and then by July 100% pellets. Then, we start the transition back in Oct. Get ready for the bucks to eat WAY more than you would think during July-Sept! They basically pile up around the free-choice feeders.

Just as long as you are consistent is the key. Letting feeders run dry is everyone's downfall.

Don't get too hung up on the type feed. I have run protein, macro/micro nutrient, fiber and all sorts of tests you can think of of with AU and private labs. Most of the feeds are very comparable. Those that advertise they are so much better are likely so high in concentration that the deer can't take advantage of it anyway.

Oh, and remember the deer are only going to receive a small % of their diet from the feed and the rest from their habitat. Do your best to improve it too. The feed will help though, especially the does during lactation.

Depending on your deer density you may want a feed station per 300 acres or so...

Don't forget to anchor the legs very good or the hogs will destroy them getting the feed out.

"Cull" is just another four letter word...

RiverRunner-Is your land local?I'm trying to find something local (north Covington/Crenshaw counties) with a good management/trophy system in place.

Now that the season is over, I'll start with a combination of corn mixed with rice bran. Once the deer get a taste of the rice bran, I'll start weaning them off of the corn and go with the rice bran. I utilize this feed with trough feeders. Once they're weaned off of the corn the hogs won't be an issue either. You have to have a roof on the trough as well. If the rice bran gets wet, it will spoil. It's a great source of protein and crude fat for deer. You'll notice a definite increase in the size of your antlers next year. Good luck.

I came, I saw, so I killed them all......Vern
