Do cows drive the deer away? Occasionally, we have cows where I hunt, and trying to figure out if I need to find a better spot.

I use to hunt a spot that had cows in the woods. Never seemed to bother the deer. The deer are use to the cows cause they are always there. I've also heard people say that deer won't hang around turkeys. I've found that not to be true either.

I wouldn't say they are scared of cows. I have seen them leave a wooded area because the cows were making so much noise it seemed to make them uncomfortable. I felt like it was more to do with inhibiting their sense of hearing. Sometimes it doesn't bother them and other times they want no company from cows.

From my experience (farm with acreage containing cattle and no cattle), the deer population per acre is lower where cattle are on the tract. I believe (no proof) that it is do to the fact that the cows remove most of the underbrush from the woods.

That being said, there are still plenty of deer living in these areas.

Heck I've seen deer in a GF when a coyote came in. The deer didn't leave but started walking towards coyote till he ran off. Might have been a different story if there were two.

Never really seen them together, but... I have a deer and a turkey on cam eating corn. I have also watched a few deer feeding next to a train track. Trains comes, they stop eating grass and look up momentarily, then go back to eating - about 20 feet from the tracks!

I go right by this bunch and about twenty others getting to my honey hole. The deer pay them no mind whenever they do meander through the woods. They actually help where I am. I've killed some really nice bucks in this area so no I don't think cows bother deer. And like Frankie says I always rub my boots in a fresh pile before entering the woods.

BTW don't none of y'all get any ideas on having a good time with that jackass in the picture. It will bite you! grin

Had a spike cruise thru some hardwoods the other day. He circled around up to some thicker area to pop out on a cut in front of a food plot (I could see up the cut). He kept looking back. So I expected another buck to pop out behind him. Then the biggest old gobbler I have ever seen pops out, walks up next to the spike with the spike looking at him in an approving way, like glad you made it bro. And they stand their side by side looking around for several minutes. I wish I had taken my camera that day.

I get turkeys and deer in food plots together on camera all the time.

Deer don't like cows that are making a lot of noise, they don't like turkeys making noise either. I hunt with a whole lot of both. On days that I see 20+ turkeys, it's hard to see a deer within that hour. Too much noise. But pay attn to the cows as well, just like any other critter. They will help you spot a deer/turkey/coyote that's nearby by looking at it before you can see it. And don't underestimate the Nose of a cow. They will smell you, associate you with food, hunt you down, and then stare up at you in your stand; all the while you sit and think "damn, if this cow can smell and see me up here, I don't have a chance with a deer". And they will F up anything in the front or back of your truck given the opportunity. Do not leave the windows down. Oh, and they will pull all the wires out of the tractor and fourwheeler. Calves love that tasty copper. That's all I got for now; now you're as dumb as me...
