I have read a couple post about the glory days of hunting in the black belt when crops were high in production before everything went to pines. Im interested in hearing what caused the shift to pine plantations, when it takes 10 to 15 years to be able to harvest a pine tree for income and do you think it will ever shift back to crops.

Jimmy Carter. Interest rates and fuel high, crop prices low. Peanut Man put many farmers out of business.

What's different in the Midwest where crop production is high. I'm sure they face the challenges. I'm just curious, I my a Florida boyboy? I have heard it on a couple post " before everything went to pines" pines are good for long term investment but not a yearly income like crop production.

I've always thought it was soybean prices. When they were high in the 70s, there were over 2 million acres throughout the blackbelt planted in soybeans. I don't know when the prices started dropping, but there are now around 200,000 acres planted I believe.

Not as long as the CRP program is around. When you can get 35 to 55 per acre to plant and grow trees and the average age of a farmer in the state is 57 then it is a no brainer. The CRP is an awesome retirement program. Plus you can reenroll your application. Some plantations planted under CRP in the first round are already on there third term. My dad has worked it and it has set him up pretty well for his retirement, but it is the fleecing of America. Very few people would clear cut a 15 to 20 year old stand just to put it back into crops. A little bit of that went on in 2011 and 2012 over in Georgia when peanuts went to about $1000 a ton, but then the price few back down and it has stopped. Also it is just about impossible for a young person to get into farming these days without going into so much debt. just my 2 cents.

Well there are many reasons the black belt left row crop for timber. Extremely high interest rates, cheap commodity prices, low crop yields = disaster to a farmer. Along came the govt with incentives to reforest land and it was just what many farmers had to do and landowners too. Then a lot of large tracts of land sell to doctors, developers lawyers and they buy what's left and plant it in trees for hunting habitat and future return on investment! So the Midwest meanwhile has different soil structure and climate not conducive to pine trees therefore they had no option and weathered the low crop prices as many suffered up there too. Today the cost of clearing pine plantation and cost of Refertilization to bring to crop production standards today just aren't cost efficient even with better prices on a large scale. I could go on forever about this I watched it happen with my own eyes as many on here did.

Didn't know all that about soybeans and peanuts. Guess we were not affected here in north Florida. We have lots of acreage in soybeans and peanuts.

Google Jimmy Carter and the Soviet Grain Embargo of 1980. It's ironic that the most well known southern farmer president was one of the most damaging to southern farmers. It damaged domestic farmers more than the Soviets. Other folks were more than ready to supply them.

I couldn't agree more. CRP is BS but we'll take it while it's here.

I noticed that. I wonder if that's for only a small time period or certain area.

Hay production 2000 tons? For the whole state? It's gotta be waaay more. A single large bale is a few hundred pounds and we can get probably 10 tons off our place. I think there's more than 200 farms in the state that cut hay.

Me either, I'm thinking the poultry farmers had a lot to do with it b/c the other serious candidate had something to do with pilgrims pride dumping contracts?? And then there was that idiot running with the ad of him riding on the horse who was gonna shoot all the illegal aliens, in hindsight probably should have voted for him!!
