His sight is getting bad. Plain and simple. He won't spend a ton, but understands the benefits of premium optics. Suggestions for the best buy available would be appreciated.

Not sure. But what real difference will he find in something like bushnell and Swarovski/leupold?? He needs it to bring in as much light and clarity as possible.

Vortex....got a 12 x50 lifetime warranty...very good glass check out optics planet all the main ones are reviewed there

I have been impressed with the bushnell bone collector binoculars that I was given last Christmas. Also don't over look Nikon optics.

I have a set of Minox that I'm happy with. You can find demo models pretty cheap on the samplelist web site.
