Lowndes County
I have been beating through swamps and briar patches all over Lowndes County since March 15 and have yet to see a snake; I went to the Hayneville town hall today after lunch to pay my water bill and a saw a snake on the front steps of the town hall. I told the clerk and hysteria began to take hold at the town hall. She asked me to kill it so in the interest of maintaining the peace and preventing a riot I retrieved my .22 pistol loaded with snake shot and dispatched the poor garter snake which had the misfortune of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Ordinarily, I would have let the poor fellow go on his way, but panic had seized the Hayneville town employees and we were only moments away from chaos. The joys of small town life!

Careful there. They actually have a pretty level headed judge in Hayneville who happens to be a democrat. I'm pretty sure the honorable Augustus 65 wouldn't have much trouble getting that charge dismissed. grin

It's a pretty common event here. Last year, my secretary walked out to her car and had a small water moccasin under her car in the parking lot at the courthouse.

being that my office is literally a stone throw away from the coast we get all kinds of critters at our office.. i have removed snakes from inside the office, had a small gator on the side walk, killed a stud moccasin in the flower bed that about bit a fellow co-worker before we saw it.. also have a bunch of black bellied whistling ducks that hang around in the parking lot..
