So I had a first in the woods this morning. I was slipping down a fire break to a gobbling bird, and a skunk pops out about 40 yards in front of me a started milling around in the fire break. First time i've ever seen one in the woods. Obviously I was a little nervous about pushing on and the the brush on both sides of the fire break was to thick to go around. So I just sat there. Listening to the turkey gobble and the skunk piddle around.

Id have to call this nature's way of Cock Blocking. grin

Turkeys be damned.

I have never been sprayed by a skunk, but have had a dog sprayed by one and it smells so bad when your up close and personal with it.

But to be honest, I believe I would take a chance at getting sprayed for a gobbler.

I would let a skunk spray me in the face if God guaranteed that I would kill a gobbler for it.

I've ran across several while hunting, both deer and turkey.....I just keep an eye on them and ease past them....I don't think they can see good because they've never paid me any attention....I've always shot the ones while deer hunting.....

I've been desperate before, but a skunk spraying me in the face will probably always be "across the line." I would've tried to run it off if possible. If not, without spooking the turkey, I'd have done the same as you!

You'll probably see him again. They are the most habitual creatures on earth because they can't see worth a flip and they don't really have any natural enemies
I have had to end up killing a couple over the years that liked to frequent some of my favorite listening spots right at daylight over and over. Kinda felt sorry for them.
I think if you approached him real slow and didn't make any sudden moves you could reach down and pet him and scratch him behind the ears.

I agree with Brentm when I find one its always there every time I have been.

Do you want to hear him gobble, or do you want to kill him.

I walked up on one in a pasture in the dark going deer hunting one morning. When the green light from my headlight hit him, I did an about face. Luckily I didn't get sprayed.

I ran up on a solid white skunk several times last week on the wma. He was between me and a gobbling bird and I just walked right on by him.

One morning a few years ago, I got to my parking spot way to early. Had a pain hit me and got out of the truck to take care of business. It was pitch black dark, no moon and it was raining. I was bowed up taking care of business and I hear something walking up on me. I just sat there as it got closer and closer. Finally, I turned my head lamp on when it was nearly in my lap. It was a damn skunk just a few feet from me. I couldn't run cause I had my pants down, so I started doing a coon squall and scared it off. I was very lucky not to get squirted by him.

I had it happen in AK while salmon fishing but I ran into a grizzly. Watched from a distance and then I went elsewhere
