The cold weather didn't kill them, but it nearly did. Every limb is dead back to the main trunks (limbs) that come out of the ground. Both bushes are sprouting from the main limbs. Not all the main limbs, but enough that the bushes will likely survive. This may be my first summer without figs in a while.

I got my fig plant starts 5 or 6 years ago off a limb my neighbor gave me off their huge bush. I broke off the one year old growth and rooted it. Their bush is in the same shape. That bush/tree is probably 30-40 years old.

Killed one in the back yard that was struggling. The one I have on the side of the house is coming out and already has a few figs growing. It produced a handful last year in the first year. Figure I'll plant a few more, maybe this weekend.

I was looking at a neighbor's fig bush a couple of days ago and there wasn't but 40 or so young figs on it. I figured the cold weather affected the crop.

i need to plant me some figs. I helped my neighbor behind me by dropping a couple scoops of top soil in his yard when I had the big FEL at the house last summer. The next day he and his wife walked over with 6 or so jars of home made salsa and figs she had put up. I could make myself sick on the figs, them things were FINE.

Dang, that stinks. As quickly as they grow it shouldn't take too long, though.

My wife's grandparents had two mulitple-trunk trees (bushes?) growing in their back yard. I'll bet they were 25-30 years old or older. The bases were huge and they produced figs like crazy. They were so tall that the birds got the top half of the crop each year.

When the grandparents died and the house was sold, the people who moved in cut both of them at the bases and poisoned them. F'king idots.

We cut ours back last fall to open it up in hopes of having mroe figs lower that we could reach easier. That combined with this past winter seems to have killed mine dead as can be. No leaves at all and all libms other thna main trunks are brittle and breaking off.

Wiley, mine are in full sun and they just started putting out last weekend. Maybe it's not too late for yours. Also they can put back out from the roots. The entire vegetative tops on both of mine died the first winter that I planted them. They came back up from the roots.

That is what mine are doing this year after planting last year. How long you think it'll take for them to bear fruit?

Maybe. Everything above ground is as brittle as can be. I reached in and started snapping off limbs and twigs trying to find something with some life in it. Nothing. This bush is over 30 years old and was a transplant from where I grew up.

Dang Wiley, I hate to hear it worse now, since the bush obviously means more to you because of where it came from. I had broken several of the small, fruit bearing limbs off of mine earlier and I thought they were dead as well.

If yours doesn't put back out, you can have some cuttings off mine to start you a new one. It obviously won't have the same sentimental value, but the cost will be right. smile

I think mine put on a few figs on it the 2nd year, the year they came back from the root stock, but I pulled them off. I wanted all the energy in the plant going to growth. If we have a "normal" winter this time, you'll definitely have some figs next year.

I have an old tree in my yard. I eat a few off of it and give a couple gallons to my buddy for his wife to put up every year. I cut it back to the ground early spring and it has not came back yet. I think it will be fine next year but I am doubtful this year.

Yep CD, that's exactly what mine look like. I think I'm gonna make a couple more bushes from cuttings from mine and plant them so I can have a backup or three. I'm afraid that the bushes may get some disease in them with all the damaged and dead wood that will be in them.

I've got leaves sprouting on mine from the main trunk now as well. Guess its not dead after all. Now i have to figure out a different spot for this plum tree I was going to replace it with.
