i don't see a lot of 28ga ammo unless you're reloading

My buddy has a browning bps 28 gauge that just came in his store it's a smaller gun but it's also something you can keep forever and still use vs using it for a couple of years then not seeing the light of day till they have kids

We will burn that bridge when we get there

Based on ammo availability I'd probably opt for the .410. I just see folks with 28 gauges and they end up in the safe only brought out to show folks and to clean them.

Why not go with a youth 20? Low brass shell doesn't kick and shells are less expensive than either .410 or 28ga.

.28 can be used typically for many years. I really like mine so much I bought another one. I shoot clays, dove, quail and would not hesitate to shot larger birds with the correct load.
410 is a great caliber and a lot of fun, but ammo cost more than .28 in our market.

My son is nine and loves shooting his 28. That being said,he shot my 20 and didn't like it on count of recoil. Hope that helps.

I would go with a 20 ga gas operated gun. The Weatherby SA-08 is a great choice.

If my only choice was between 28 and 410, I would pick the 28 ga if birds were considered. If it were only squirrel and rabbit, then the 410 with #5 or #4 shot.

Out of those two, 28 gauge for sure. Specially if birds are involved. You nose well buy one you like to case you will be loving it to.

I have a franchi 28 ga that I absolutely LOVE...Hampton Cove Wal-Mart carries 28 ga shells so I would think any Wal-Mart could get them for you.

Use to have a book that stated if the 410 went by its gauge it would be around a 67 gauge. I have no idea if that's true or not but there is a world of difference between the two and I would get the 28.

28 is ballistic ally the best shotgun caliber. It is so much more than a 410. Honestly, except for the cost of shells it is better than the 20. And shells are not that much more.

I would go 28 if I was in the market you are in. In my opinion it will pattern better, and be a lot easier for your kids to actually kill birds with. My buddy shoots one, and has never had a problem finding shells, but he knows he can't wait and get them opening day of bird season at walmart either.

Have shot all three mentioned - 410, 28 and youth 20 (pump).

First, the Y20. They kick like a mule - at least the Rem does. My wife and son hated the one I got for them, and when I shot it agreed. Sold it.

410. easy recoil, but for what? Not really enough for dove, and skeet only if you are REAL good (imo). It is a fun kid's gun if all they are gonna do is punch some paper and shoot 3-4 rds at a time.

28 - man I am glad I got one! Actually tubed a 12 ga O/U for starters. It is the sweetest shotgun/gauge I have ever shot. I now am looking for a dedicated 28. Great for skeet - as good as a 12; great dove gun; as soft as a 410; cost is the same as a 410 - EXCEPT you will pay more because you will shoot it a LOT more. And you CAN get steel/non-toxic IF you wanted to take a kid duck hunting. I wouldn't do anything more than teal/woodies/swamp mallards, but it should work fine inside 25 yds.

My son shoots a Rem. 870 in 28ga. Light recoil and kills doves like a 20 or 12.
Shells are $10 a box, but thats for a high grade shell like an AA or SPS, so they are really only about $3 a box higher than a 20/12 ga AA or SPS.
My next Yildiz will be a 28.

Take your kids hunting instead of hunting your kids.

haleyville al,
I got thinking about it a little while ago. I have a youth 870 in a 20. But for a 20 its rough. Im leaning now toward a auto 20 or a 870 in the 28. I could make it easy and just get both after all I will have two boys. Think my wife would go for it.

Go with a youth 20 with low recoil loads, if you load you can load em down to .410 recoil level. Ammo availability and cost for the .410 and 28 are not appealing.
