Have a stand overlooking a kudzu patch. There is a small greenfield that I always plant. It always gets mowed to the ground by the deer. This year I sprayed a few paths in the kudzu in hopes of expanding the existing food plot.

My four wheeler disk became hopelessly entangled in vines. After spending hours chopping it free, it is time for a plan B. Reading all the hype over the throw & mow food plots got me thinking. Typically after a good frost, the kudzu dies & leaves relatively open, bare ground. Natural, green vegetation sprouts & deer do eat this stuff.

My question is has anyone frost seeded a kudzu patch with cereal rye? Did it attract deer? Fertilizing & liming a kudzu patch isn't an option. With those limitations will the rye be more palatable to the deer than the natural forage.

The goal is simply to increase tonnage & provide more late season forage.

I've never top seeded a kudzu patch, but i've top seeded skidder trails, fire beaks, logging roads, and power lines, with cereal rye with great success.

I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Take your kids hunting instead of hunting your kids.

I'd rather be LOST in the woods than FOUND in the city.

Sounds like a good idea to me. Won't hurt to try. I'd go ahead and throw some in it.

Sounds like I will be the test case for this. Going to buy some rye and try it. Only going to be out the cost of the seed so not a lot to lose.

Remember, the seed has to reach the soil, to germinate and grow. As long as the thatch is not real bad, the rain will wash the seed to the soil.

I am more worried about the rye getting above the vines. Germination shouldn't be an issue. The sprayed areas should work well. If I can find time those areas will be planted soon. The others after a good frost causes the kudzu to go dormant.

If you'll plant "rye grass", it'll come back every year when the kudzu dies back. I have several friends that do this. That's not a very good greenfield but it will work. Might have to top sow a few bare spots every now and again.
