How is everyone's food plots looking ??? I realize we have not had much rain, and hope that is the only reason our plots are not looking real good. Only reason for asking, is I bumped into a gentleman this weekend that mentioned he was sold some BAD seed from a Co-Op store. That is where we bought our seed. Anyone else having this problem???

I doubt he had bad seed. I don't think the Co Op sells planting grains that havn't been certified/germination tested. If he bought horse feed oats or something similar then he should have fed the seed instead of planting them.

It has been my experience that when i hear of someone buying bad seed from a reputable business, it usually means they planted on their normal schedule (with no rain in sight) as opposed to waiting on the conditions to be right.

I planted mine about 3 weeks ago and timed it perfect rain wise. They are looking great although hey need more moisture now. Surprisingly the deer are pounding them even though there is a decent acorn drop going on.

No rain combined with probably pouring the fertilizer to it. Probably burned up any chance it had.

I've worked at the Co-op all the way through college, never sell bad seed. We sell that years current seed and if we had seed from last year( usually just a couple of bags) we always let the customer know that the seed is out of date. Which I've had 3 year old seed come up before. An back to the outdated seed, usually customers ask if we have outdated seed and if we do we sell it way under cost. Sounds like someone let their seed burn up or plant to deep one!!

I sat on a field in Tallapoosa Co this weekend that looked like a Pennington commercial!! Guy told me they had only been planted two weeks. Field was thick and lush, which made me wonder how much feeding was happening on them, but I saw 9 deer on it and virtually all of it was chewed on.
He said they limed all their fields in February and rotor-tilled them, they were rotor-tilled again for planting. That makes a lot better seed bed than disking.

This is our first year doing plots all on our own since my Dad passed away and I have A LOT to learn, but I'm pleased with how our plots are looking so far. We definitely adjusted our plans according to the conditions and it seemed to work out good. Seeing a good bit of deer use on the plots already.

We planted ours 3 weeks ago. All are up and looking good, but like most need another good rain or two. The deer are hammering them, which isn't helping much on letting them get established.
