I planted my fields at the start of the drought a month ago and haven't had a chance to go back due to 3 boys, sports and other distractions? According to NOAA, I haven't had 0.1" since then. I'm afraid that the turkeys and doves will have eaten most of my seed by now and was toying with the idea of broadcasting some Elbon Rye after we are done with youth weekend since there is a 90% chance of rain Sunday. My only fear is the projected low of 24 next Tuesday. Could the Rye survive the initial freeze and stand a chance since it will be above freezing after that?

Cereal rye is IMO, the best seed you can use, planting late. It will sprout and grow in temps above 36 degree's, when everything else is dormant. Do you have any? There is a rye shortage this year.

Like I said, I'm plaining on broadcasting Elbon Rye, which is a cereal rye, and yes I have a source. My concern is the 24 degree freeze a couple days after I broadcast the seed out. Will it survive?

I'm no seed expert, but i would think that it would.

What about a winter wheat and Elbon Mix? Do you guys think that wheat will come up as well?

Wheat is not as hardy as Rye so I would stick with just rye since we are about to get a decent freeze.

Wheat, oats, rye, whatever you can get your hands on will work. We are hurting for rain here too and I still have to plant many fields at my farm in cover crops, using oats mostly. It will come up in the cold, it just needs moisture. Plant whatever you got, feel free to mix with wheat.

Y'all won't get near hard enough freeze down near mobile to kill wheat, oats, or anything. I had coker oats make it through our winter here last year and it got down to 7 degrees at the farm.

the rye will be fine. That stuff grows in lots colder weather than what you have down there.
