I don't shoot does in the evening, period. Don't want to have to fool with 'em in the evening, not getting home until 7 o'clock or so.

When I shoot one in the morning, she's gotta be standing in or very near a road.

We quit killing does period on our Alabama property. Population is really struggling the last 6-8 years. We know neighbors are killing them but us not killing them has to help even a little.

On my Florida property we still kill em, but we only get 8 doe days. That's why we have such a good population too. IMO areas of Alabama like where I hunt just can't support a many does being harvested without a significant impact on the overall population. A lot of people can't control their trigger finger so I'm for a controlled doe harvest. I'd like to see more people be responsible but I'm now convinced by my observations that a basically unlimited doe season is a bad idea.

Typically, i won't shoot one on Sunday afternoon, if i'm hunting, which i don't do much hunting in the afternoon on Sunday, anymore. I usually hunt, about every evening on my farm, so i take Sunday evening off.

WhiteCityHunter, does the limited time of 8 days for your "doe days" make you and other hunters more inclined to get the job done then compared to having more time like in Alabama and possibly finding excuses to not shoot them (too tired, ready to go home, been watching a buck, etc.)?

There is no 'job to get done'. We don't subscribe to the kill as many does as possible at my Florida property and we have plenty of deer and plenty of nice bucks. The 8 days controls doe harvest and prevents over harvest. I know for a fact that on my Alabama property that does have been overharvested. You don't go from seeing and killing deer on a regular basis to hunting entire seasons only seeing a handful of deer. The contrast is striking between the two areas and can easily be explained by the contrast in management styles. I just do not believe that people can voluntarily control their trigger finger and will take what they are given. That's too bad, but it is what it is.
I'll only hunt my Alabama property a couple weekends this year just because the deer are thin and I can't justify harvesting a doe there anymore. We will see what a few seasons of zero doe harvest and minimal buck harvest results in. Hopefully it will be positive.
Alabama is a big state with vastly different land types, usage and deer herds. A one size fits all approach is a failure in management in my humble opinion. On the other hand the regional management in Florida I believe to be the way deer herds should be managed and most Florida hunters have embraced it.

This is what I was alluding to. Instead of spreading out the allowance (time) to kill does, the shorter "doe days" -- 8 in your area/state -- makes hunters get it done then to meet their club quotas or goals, or put a few deer in the freezer, or whatever. And then it's over. Eight days, three weekends, whatever. But not dragged out.

I don't shoot them. I want those little furry buck factories to be fat, happy and ready to be breed!

I don't ever shoot does in the afternoons, I hate messing with them in the dark. We have so many it isn't hard to kill one any morning you want to with a gun.
