I don't do it but have no problem if you do. I grew up hunting with my dad and grandad who are both old schoolers, and I wasn't ever allowed to call before season. Used to go listen several days a week about 1-2 weeks before season, and all I did was owl or crow called. Now do I think calling before season is bad, not at all. But for some that sit around and practically call the bird up before season, IMHO are making their jobs tougher. I actually was surprised to hear that one of my mentors call before season. He usually calls just enough to get a response and then lays it down which in my mind does no harm at all. I don't do it and or haven't done it yet but I'm not above it, just wanted to see where y'all stand on it.

I don't do it. I had a buddy that did last year the eve before opener and accidentally called up the big bird he was after and the bird spooked and flew! Never killed him.

I have seen this happen. Years ago in hardaway I went the day before season to listen with a buddy. Bird was less than 150 yards tearing it up, my buddy couldn't revisit calling to him and so he did. I told him he better quit or else the bird was gonna walk up to us. He didn't listen and continued calling until the next thing we heard was putting, he called the bird in too close and he saw us in plain clothes and the truck. Next morning he went into that spot as there were several birds in that area. The bird from the morning before gobbled right at first light and continued gobbling good. He said he called to that bird 1 time and he never gobbled again!! Flew down and went the other way, never to be seen or heard again!!

I dont do it. What purpose would it serve? Why educate something that doesnt need an education.

Calling before season and calling too much just educates them on your tone and cadence... It's tough enough but I am amazed at the folks that do it. Practicing in your car on way to work is the best time for diaphragms IMO.... Just might spit a tad on your shirt and/or tie !!!

I rarely even go listen before season mainly because I hunt the same places every year and I know birds are there. If I was to go listen I damn sure wouldn't call because I have enough trouble killing uneducated birds as is.

Why? I see no point in it, even for practice. I know things sound different outdoors than they do in the house or the truck but why risk educating them.

I like to go to some of the management areas and practice my skills. Is there something wrong with that?? It knocks the rust off with season coming up. Ya know?

I know of guys that got tickets on Guntersville for calling ducks out of season

Number 1 rule in my book. I usually go listen some. But I would rather not even visit a place than let them know the end is near.
