Ive flown once and I was about 3 at the time so obviously I remember nothing about it. Well in a couple months im flying to North Dakota for a duck hunt and I was hoping to get some tips from the aldeer brethren who fly a decent amount or quite frankly, have ever flown.
I will be carrying on a gun. And atleast one clothes bag in addtion to my 2 permitted carry on bags. Any tips on anything from food/drinks to gun specific details, and really anything help, please post up.
Thanks in advance,
Dylan 2 carry ons, sure about that? According to United, they allow 2 carry ons. One somewhat smaller than the other. I don't fly a lot and don't think I've been on United but those I've been on is one carry on (small suit case that must fit in overhead or under the seat) and you are allowed like a lap top or brief case or camera case or purse. Wear your light boots on the plane, carry your heavy coat on with ya. When packing the large checked bag, put stuff inside other stuff. When I went to Canada, I had my pack boots inside a bag and they were stuffed with, socks and ammo. Use every square inch.

I wish I could go lighter. Gotta have waders though. And warm clothes. I appreciate all the info so far.

Could ya ship the waders with the ammo? No way you'll carry more clothes than for a Canadian Whitetail hunt, gotta be prepared for minus 30 and the wind always blows. The waders are gonna be a problem , take up a lot of room and heavy.

The waders only weigh about 13#s. I figured there's no way I would go over the weight limit. But yes I could ship them before hand but honestly they dont weigh that much. I figured id get a got portion of socks and underwear. My carryon bag. Should just have some base layers and midweight stuff in my check bag. Thanks for the tip about weighing every thing!

Sorry I misread.
Ship your waders and any heavy clothing two weeks prior to departure.
Depending on you gun case, pack what clothing you can in there addition to knives, leatherman's, etc.
You get one backpack/carry-on bag plus a briefcase sized piece as a carry-on.
Each check bag can weigh 50 lbs.
In your carry-on, take a set of clothes in the event that your luggage goes AWOL.
It's not a bad idea to wear and pair of slip-on shoes on the plane but, if you are trying to travel lite, you might want to wear a pair of hunting boots. It will be a small issue at security check-in but it's not that big of a deal.
Take a Nalgen (or some sort of hard plastic bottle) in your carry-on. Or you can always buy a bottle of water and a candy-bar/protein bar after security in the airport. If you take a water bottle with you, it will have to be empty.
Put your camera, video camera, cell phone, charger cables, binoculars, etc in your carry-on.
Make sure to have TSA locks on all of your bags including your carry-on bags. They aren't required on the carry-on bags but they are a good idea. If you end up on a small plane, they may not let you take you carry-on on the plane. If that happens, your bags with your stuff will be left in the hands of the luggage monkeys to do with as they see fit. I had a video camera and a $75 battery for my 35mm camera come up missing once when I wasn't allowed to take my carry-on on the plane.

Before 911 I flew a bunch. Would always have a couple of Hot Wheels cars with me in case I got put beside a noisy kid. Give 'em a new toy and they usually shut up. Don't know if toys are allowed past the gestapo.

Dylan are you flying United out of Mobile? If so I would do one of two things. Change my flight to New Orleans or plan to leave a couple days earlier than planned arrival date. I can almost promise that you will not get there on time out of that piss poor airport!
Two trips out of that place to Nebraska and Colorado resulted in late arrival first trip and a day and half later 2nd trip. Never again will I attempt to fly out of that place!!
The only thing I can add that hasn't already been covered is be sure to declare you are checking a firearm.
Good luck and safe travels.

last year I flew to Missouri to hunt at Habitat Flats. I carried one carry on (backpack), a large suitcase with waders, boots, jacket, pants and etc and barely was under my 50lbs. When you go in, you must "declare" your fire arm. They will check to see if unloaded, place the deceleration inside and allow you to lock the case. Now this is where its tricky. I carried a couple locks. one was a TSA approved lock the other a regular pad lock. I flew out of Pensacola FL. The agent there said it had to be TSA approved lock so they could have access. When I flew back from St Louis, MO, the agent said it couldn't be TSA so they wouldn't have access. I used an aluminum gun case with plenty of padding, and they beat the shucks out of it. If I fly with a gun again, I will have one of the pelican style cases with the butterfly latch system like this one Cabelas Armor Extreme gun case Also, print boarding passes, in addition to the phone app. helps with gate updates, and seating.

I wanted to fly out of New Orleans. But the dang tickets are 600$ more out of New Orleans. I thought that was crazy.

If you are flying out of here Im literally 2 miles from the airport. Id be glad to help you out as far as parking your car at my house and picking you up/drop off, etc if it will save you some money. Its no trouble at all. Man I appreciate that TC! I think i've got my dad talked into picking me up and dropping me off though. But if that changes, i'll def let ya know man check Pensacola. When I went to Missouri, PCola was the cheapest flights.
