When you shoot a doe with a fawn, do you take the fawn too? I never did until I started thinking about what happened to the fawn afterwards. I couldn't bear the thought of a yote eating the fawn alive so I figured out a quick head shot was much less painless than the alternative. Also a head shot is a must to keep from wasting most of the tender meat. What's your opinion?

Personally I won't shoot a doe if it has fawn with it

Well I'm not shooting a fawn for 2 reasons, the biggest being it's illegal. The second is that they are self sufficient at a much younger age than most give them credit for. If you let it walk, it has a pretty decent chance of survival. You shoot it and that chance drops to zero. Pulled this from an article At what age can a fawn live on its own? If an archer harvests a doe, and the doe is with a fawn, what are the chances of the fawn living on its own? Would another doe take it under its wing, ever?
Fawns are functionally weaned by the time they are 10 weeks old. They will still nurse if allowed up until they are 5 or 6 months old. However, this is not necessary for their survival. After 10 weeks of age, fawns are perfectly capable of obtaining food on their own by grazing and browsing. Deer do learn feeding behavior so the longer a doe and fawn are together, the more the fawn learns. By the time archery season rolls around, fawns are self sufficient and they remain with their mother for purely social reasons. Orphaned fawns are rarely adopted but there is no need of this in the fall anyway.

If the fawn is big enough to survive on its own ill shoot it. If not then it gets a pass.

You don't have to worry this year since we are cut back to one antler less deer a day.

I do not shoot doe's that have a fawn or even look like they do. I try to take the older fat doe's or a younger maiden doe that has never had a fawn. I don't believe that fawn would ever make it if it is to small without its mother.

I won't shoot a doe if the fawn has spots but if the spots are gone momma is in trouble. Well, I may not be technically correct, but to me a "fawn" is a spotted deer. Once the spots are gone, I no longer consider it a "fawn", so yeah, I'm with you. If I have a group of does and I'm gonna shoot one, I always pic the biggest by default.

Our club has a 5 deer limit that includes what you, your dependants or your guests kill. I don't shoot any does. I ain't wasting one of my deer on a stinking doe.

When fawns loose their spots they are weaned , eating what any other older deer eats, mamma is fair game. The fawn will be fine. I guess that's why it's against the law to shoot a spotted fawn. You and your common sense and reasoning have no place here.
