Haha. yeah its pretty much a foul smell, at least those does were.
Matt let me ask you this; Was there any significant wind that day? I'm trying to learn what I can from this and I have noted that the wind when I smelled this was 0 to 1 MPH ... pretty much non existant
I was in the bottom of a drainage between two large ridges. I remember the wind blowing from the SW that morning. Not sure of the speed, but it was blowing. I have it recorded in my observation log on another computer.

I have personally seen several new hunters shoot a deer with either a bow or a gun and within 10 minutes they are on the ground looking for him. I can't tell you how many deer have been lost or pushed over to a neighbors property because the hunter didn't give the deer time to expire. You spend all season waiting for that shot at a good buck and then you can't wait another hour, two or three to get down and go look for him. I will never understand that mentality.
The next one is to mistaken a button buck for a doe. Just learn what the head of a mature doe looks like or even better, don't shoot any deer that appears by itself, chances are they are a button buck.

I've smelled deer in the woods several times. Very few big bucks I've killed have stopped in a field or opening. Most of the time they're cruising and I have to shoot them moving or try to stop them. Yeah, I don't stop and admire them.

Well I just keep making them ... at least I learn each time and this time it didn't cost me anything.
Today I learned a very valuable lesson. I've field dressed 4 deer now so I know what tarsal gland secretion smells like. Well today sitting in my climber 10 ft off the ground I smelled that unmistakable tarsal smell over the span of 10 or so minutes. Surely I can't smell deer I thought.
Well as I was packing up to go to work I standing by a boulder sorting my gear and I see a nose come around the boulder. Yep, a group of 4 does but they were so small I didn't bother getting my gun. They fell over each other trying to get away from me, was a funny sight.
Lesson learned: Yes you can smell deer working upwind of you if the conditions are right. Stay put when you smell em ...
I've smelled them many times. Jumped a few rutting bucks out of thickets that would take your breath when you got to the actual bed.

One mistake I see is some hunters never learn to kill a deer. I took a young hunter(18 or so) a couple weeks ago that had several several deer present him with shots that I am sure were doable, but he could not get a shot off. He has hunted for years with his father and his dad is very particular about what is shot. I believe kids and new hunters need to pull the trigger on some animals in order to be ready when the time comes to take the trophy home. I heard it from an adult this past week as well. Describing details of a buck and then stating that they could not get a shot off. If you could tell it was a mature 8 with a kicker it should have a bullet hole in it! I was hell on the deer in the 80s-90s in south alabama when I was growing up and learned just how to make one mine. My dad let me kill all I wanted as long as I cleaned them, as they were seen as pest. To this day I can get on target and shoot a deer in a fraction of a second thanks to a ton of practice early in my hunting life. This is a goodie. Let young and beginner hunters shoot stuff. And there's a heck of a lot of difference in shooting from a shooting house off sand bags and free hand on a buck trotting through thick timber.

I believe kids and new hunters need to pull the trigger on some animals in order to be ready when the time comes to take the trophy home. Agree 100%. And not even trophy deer only. Experience kills consistently (not talking about luck at all). The more you kill, the better you get IMO...

Telling anyone when you kill a deer or showing anyone a picture of it. Thinking that they are being cute/and or funny when they ain't.... Or, not knowing when to let a stand (or anything else for that matter) rest.... To anyone other than the "everyone is out to kill my deer" crowd, it is rather comical.

This is basically my first year deer hunting and I will have no problems pulling the trigger as long as it is a legal deer and I can get off an ethical shot. Passed on a buck, but was 450 yards away which is well beyond what I have had the chance to practice.

I'm amazed at the number of people, who can describe a deer's rack, but couldn't get a shot. A friend of mine told me one time, that he had seen a good 8 ptr that morning. He descibed a hole in the main beam. I asked, why didn't you shoot it? He said, i couldn't get a shot. Really? You could see that he had a hole in his main beam, but couldn't get a shot?. I've shot them in the neck and head before, because that was all i could see. Folks this ain't TV, we don't have mature bucks walk out into wide open spaces, on a regular basis.

[quote=gulfmako] Folks this ain't TV, we don't have mature bucks walk out into wide open spaces, on a regular basis. Ya mean they don't walk out in the wide open field and you make pitiful grunts on your call, they come trotting up 30 yards, look up at ya then turn for a perfect shot. Surely you are mistaken, I've seen it done on TV by "pro hunters" many times.

2dogs, the ones that kill me, are the ones that wont shoot a walking deer at 50 yards, with a rifle. They grunt to stop him, and then shoot him. A few times, they tried that and the buck run like hell. I shouted at the tv, serves you right, dumbarse!

Kill em walking, running, sleeping, standing straight up, upside down, broadside, dancing, whatever it takes.
I don't remember ever stopping a deer with a rifle in hand. If I had waited for a still broadside shot on a deer with a rifle I'd sure have a whole lot fewer of them dead.
