I thought the same thing at one time. Then I actually got a 700. I have owned 3 700s and one model 7. They all shot as well as my Tikka's and Brownings I owned. All I had to do was find the ammo they liked. Why would a gun company make a rifle that needs to be "tweaked"? I don't mean tinkering to get less than 1" moa, I mean just to make the thing decent. Seems to be a common thread with 700 owners. They all love them for their accuracy...after they spend several hundred dollars to get them to shoot worth a damn. I don't get it either.

Very true. I run 130 gr through my .270 700. It does very well with Rem Core-Lokt and Hornady SST. I tried Federal Fusions and all bets were off from one shot to the next. Very interesting how different guns will react to different bullets.

What grain ammo are you using? Most people like to shoot 130gr in 270 for the speed. Although, I have found a lot of guns prefer a 140gr. Typical weight range for 270 is 130-150 and I think most manufacturers of non-custom rifles will attempt to make something that goes middle of the road to suit the masses. I have seen many 270 s that shot great with 140 and not so good with 130.

Every 700 that I've got shoots sub MOA and have not had any tinkering other than replacing triggers in 2 of 'em due to the recall. It's not as uncommon as you make it out to be to have a VERY accurate 700 straight off the shelf.

Just checked back in after posting this. Thanks for all the comments. I've definitely got some ideas and start with some of the basics, screws being tightened appopriately, etc.. Here's my setup. I'm shooting off sandbags with a good rest, and don't think that it's me. I've shot 130gr Hornady American Whitetail ~2-2.5" groups I've shot Federal Fusions 130gr. ~3" group (first two bullets almost touching) It seems like the bullets start drifting to the right after a couple shots.

my best 700 ADL was a pawn shop .270 that shot lights out after bedding and a little judicious sanding in the forearm (i used to do all of that work myself; very easy with a little patience). it liked 150-grain bullets best (can't remember which brand). best handload grouped into a single holes barely big enough to show edges of the standard "cloverleaf." older ADLs are very, very good, and i was very, very stupid to sell it just to try something else ...

Nice looking gun. What kind of scope? And more importantly, who mounted it for you? I would try some 140s as suggested. Also, get a Ballistic tip ammo and try it. I had an xbolt that shot fusions at 1.5, but would have one hole with nosler accubond factory loads. Just checked back in after posting this. Thanks for all the comments. You might want to try one of these. Pretty cheap and a lot of guys find it tightens up their groups considerably. Although all the advice about having all the screws (stock/bases/rings) torqued to spec is right on the money. $60 toward a decent torque screwdriver is a great investment. It drives me nuts the way so many of the well known gun stores will mount a scope "by feel"... "I've been doing it this way for twenty years" they'll tell you. Well how many of those rifles have they tried to go out and shoot with? Thus endeth the rant...

Gotch ya. I assume you have mounted before, but if not do start there. The first mounting job I did was HORRIBLE. That gun shot 4-5 inch groups. Leupold VXIII 4.5-14 x 50 with 30mm tupe and AO on the side. I mounted it.

My son has a 700 in .270 that shoots the cheap Federal blue box 150gr almost in one hole at 100yards. I'm betting you need heavier bullets. This is the ammo... http://www.federalpremium.com/products/details/rifle.aspx?id=11

If the screws on the stock are tight forget about any stock work. That's not where to start at this point. Floating the barrel is not a cure-all for accuracy problems. It should shoot much better without floating.
If your stock is tight, screws on bases and rings are tight and you are certain 100% your scope isn't the problem....
And you've properly broken in the barrel and tried 3-4 different loads.
If you are still getting 2.5-3 inch groups get it ready to send it back to Remington. Their quality control in recent years had become the consumer.
Just take it to a gun smith and have him look down the barrel and report back on how bad the lands are rounded off and how bad the chatter marks are....

Oh... and shoot a 3 shot group. 3 shot groups fine for a hunting rifle. And make sure you let the barrel cool.

[quote=Oscarflytyer I have no experience with either.
Then how do you know they suck? The internet? [/quote] Hell no. I aint no French Model. I have picked up many. Also know of others' issues. And of a gun store that plain stopped selling them as they were POS's! Supposedly they have things headed in the right direction, but I looked at two the other night and they aren't half the original Marlins I have in my safe. And they time and a half for the new ones.

Have u pulled the barrel & stock apart & make sure it doesn't have a bunch of oil that may have gotten between the recoil lug & stock?..Had a similar experience with a ruger mkii 300 mag,and that was the root of my problems..
Do not regret growing older, it's a privilege denied to many!
