I tend to have very good hearing when it comes to hunting, I can hear the slightest little noise. but I've never been able to "hear the bullet hit the deer" when someone else shoots, even when other people say they did hear it when one of the guys at our place shoots. like someone said above, I'd be willing to bet the direction the shooter was shooting in relation to you would make or break hearing the impact You may have and didnt realize it. It happens fast. It's hard to describe it typing, but to me its always been a fwoop- pow, with only a split second between the two sounds. Like i said, I've heard other ppl's bullets hit a deer, but never mine.

I have always heard people say if you shoot something with a 22 its more dangerous than the rest of the calibers because it will bounce around inside a body cavity. I don't see how this is physically possible. Please tell me some of you others have heard this too. I've always heard it, no idea if it's true or not.

Yes, but you don't know what he hit (deer, tree, water). Lots of trees get hit, but I do know the sound y'all are talking about. We shoot a 44mag rifle a lot and it makes a hell of a pop when it hits my metal sign target from 100 yards. That's kind of my point. Mud, dirt, tree, gut, bone, etc? I don't how a human can distinguish exactly what a bullet hits traveling at well over 2,000 FPS, while sitting a half a mile away from the gunshot, based on hearing it.

It is easy if your buddy shoots ballistic tips, and is dragging a deer out of the woods a little while after the shot.

Ok let's dive into this.
Here's the scenario, and we have all probably been in this one.
You are sitting in a shooting house on a greenfield. Your buddy is in another shooting house say 1/2 (7 or 800 yards) mile away.
He shoots a doe with a high powered rifle.
You know after hearing the shot if he hit the deer or not?
Maybe my hearing is bad, but I can't distnguish the difference in that scenario. if his shooting a 7mag youll hear a boom then a crack then a thump

Ill take my chances with a .40 instead. I say this. I have a friend, who in younger days was an IDOT. He and another guy threw a beer bottle at some hood rats on a street corner. They were drivin a jeep with a bikini top, and a dude on the street pulled out a .22 and let loose on them as they sped off. A bullet struck his friend in the back of the head, but didnt penetrate the skull. It stayed under the skin, traveled around his head and exited above his eye brow. DR told him if it had been a center fire he'd be dead.

Head a story of a cop on a traffic stop who was shot by the driver. Then bullet hit him in the side in teh gap between his vest panels. The bullet allegedly hit a rib on the opposite side, ricocheted of and hit his aorta and he bled out in seconds. I have no way to verify that story though.

Saturday night specials can't be used on other nights of the week. I've always heard that same thing about 22 bullets traveling through the body causing more damage. Maybe that's why the dang ammo so hard to get now.

My father use to be a paramedic, he told me on numerous occasions of people trying to commit suicide tried to shot themselves in the head with a .22, it just zipped around the skull and exit.

Brother in law committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest with a 22lr revolver. Bullet entered just above his left nipple, clipped the Aorta at the top of his heart traveled up his spine and lodged in his neck just under his left ear. He died within 5 minutes....I lived next door and by the time I got over there he was already ashen gray in the face and slumped over just as I reached him nothing I could do but watch him die. Doctor said it would not have helped him if he did that sitting in the ER. This description was from his autopsy.

My step dad was shot 5 times with a 22 about 32years ago, they say he died twice on the way to the hospital..He has a "huge" scar from his chest to his navel, and he still carries 2 rounds in his lower back to this day..
Do not regret growing older, it's a privilege denied to many!
