I saw a couple of guys walking around the convention last weekend with a triangular box that had turkeyfan.com on it. N2deer and I found the booth and it was an umbrella type deal that opened up into a turkey fan and had a head printed on it. No lie it was twice as wide as a normal turkey fan and almost twice as tall. To a gobbler it would look like a 90 lb turkey was coming at him.

There was a customer standing there buying one and he had to be 70 yrs old. I don't know. I guess you could use it as an umbrella if it rains. The ghost blind was back again as well. I think you would use it more to blind a turkey than hide from him.

So turkey hunters dont have morals anymore awesome. The ultimate goal is to shoot one's beak clean off his head. It's not a moral issue one way or the other. It's personal preference.

Being a novice turkey hunter, I am not up on the latest gadgets and gizmos. Thanks for the link, I think. I watched the 9 tips video. I just about spit my coffee out after watching Tip #1. Tip #3 is awesome too ...

Ain't that the truth! I wish they would go back to letting us use rifles so I wouldn't have to worry about all that calling and camo stuff, plus wouldn't have too worry about breaking a tooth on some high-dollar tungsten shot.

Let me start off with this statement, im not bashin anyone that useses any type of decoys. But is this what turkey hunting is comming to? Abunch of belly crawlers? There comes a time when you have to realize that maybe that turkey just out smarted you. This will kill the sport just like the spinning wing decoy in duck hunting.

I've killed some birds over decoys. I use them in certain situations. I’ve hunted with mine twice in the past 2 years.
I wouldn't mind killing one while fanning either. Don't think I'd let the bird get within 15 yards of me though. I'm sure I'd miss just like a lot of the shooters on the video did if one got any closer.
To all the guys that have a problem with decoys. If you really want to call it hunting, leave the calls at home as well.
Hunt the way you want.

I personally think fanning is asking to get shot. From a personal experience, I hunted a farm in TN last year. While calling on the edge of a large pasture, I saw a fan emerge on the other side. I immediately got my gun up and aimed in that direction. At this point the "turkey" was still ~250yds away, but I wanted to be ready. Once it got more out in the open, something looked strange about that "turkey." I could eventually tell it was a human crawling behind a scoot-n-shoot. From head on, he was pretty much hidden completely behind it. What made it stupid for him is that he wasn't supposed to even be on that land hunting. He was trespassing and crawling around behind a gobbler decoy.
Now I perfectly understand that makes him an idiot, not necessarily the method itself. As far as the data goes, I've read a lot of stories about turkey hunters being killed, none of them go into details of whether it was behind a decoy or not, next to a tree or not, etc. Furthermore, just because it hasn't been all over the news doesn't mean it hasn't happened and certainly doesn't mean it can't happen.
My personal take is that it opens oneself up to more danger. Kind of like just being in the woods deer hunting vs. crawling around in a deer suit in the woods. Common sense tells you which is more dangerous. I don't need data to confirm or deny the risk of looking more like a game animal in the woods full of idiots that are hunting.

Let me start off with this statement, im not bashin anyone that useses any type of decoys. so stating that using a fan is "immoral" isn't bashing? This will kill the sport just like the spinning wing decoy in duck hunting. duck hunting is probably bigger than it's ever been. the spinning wing decoy has had very little affect on that one way or the other. If you can legally kill 5 birds/yr, why does it matter how as long as it's done ethically? If fanning really makes it that much easier that you feel it's "immoral", then all it will accomplish is getting some hunters their limit earlier in the season. 5 dead birds is 5 dead birds.....

I've already commented on this when this started a week or 2 ago but I will say again. Where some draw the line for turkey hunting is funny to me. "Hey that fanning is cheating; let me sit over here dressed like a tree, sounding like a turkey, using a gun that shoots these new fangled shells that lets me shoot 70yds, and see if I can call this one close enough to the property line to kill it". Don't dare use that fan though; that's immoral and not real turkey hunting. How about we use bows, rub dirt on our bodies to camo it, and use blades of grass to call with. Why one person draws the line in one place and another in another place I really don't care; just find it funny. Heck I've been so mad at them sometimes I would try about anything but at the same time have felt so blessed to watch others put on a show I wasn't even sure I wanted to kill them. That's why I love it!! Excellent post.

Actually ambushing and putting the sneak on turkeys, is harder than calling one in. When you call one in, all you do is sit there, and i don't want to hear how great of a caller you have to be to call one in, because i'm not a great caller and kill at least 3 a year and i don't quit work when the season comes in. Any legal way you can harvest one, is ok with me. Some people think their above certain things, and thats fine by me.
