Anyone hearing any birds down that way? Just trying to see if they are gobbling yet. I will be in the anniston area on private ground and hoping the weather and the birds are in good shape for the opener. I have never hunted Alabama before so any real info will be appreciated. Thanks in advance

I don't know where your from but unless it warms up and the sun shines for a few days I don't think they are going to be to fired up by the opener.

I may could see some having a problem if I was hunting state land. But, I will be on private land where no one else will be. Just wondering if anyone is hearing any. Not trying to ruffle any feathers lol.

The temps say they wont be ready by the opener. The pics say otherwise.

Well I can't wait to get there. At least it will be warmer than it is here in Ohio. Lows below zero and highs in the singles and teens. I have traded out some deer hunting on my farm here for the rights to some land down there. I wouldn't ask if I were going to the national forest or wma's. I have hunted enough states to know that most places do not welcome out of staters when it comes to hunting.

I've hunted several different areas from central Alabama to further south, my experience is that the early season gobbling is more reliable the further south you go. Although I've heard reports that those Jackson Co. Birds were hammering during the opener when my central Alabama birds were being tight lipped.

Don't be shocked if you don't hear much on opening weekend. There's no guarantees that they'll be gobbling.

Last weekend of deer season where we hunt in the south zone we I had two different groups of gobblers that gobbled early morning. One group( two or three) gobbled 15 times, the other ( two I think) gobbled about half that

I have seen over 100 turkeys in the last two weeks. They are grouped up in fields. Gobblers are strutting. I have not been out in the morning to listen.

In the Anniston area, you will be very lucky to hear much gobbling at all on the opener. I know the birds I hunt up that way never get fired up til april. As someone else said, south Alabama always seems to be fired up by the opener, north bama always seems slow on gobbling the first two weeks.

I agree with this.

Do you want to hear him gobble, or do you want to kill him.

Thanks for the info guys. I wish I could have come in April but have to many other hunts lined up. This one just kinda come about over night. Even if we don't hear them or kill any we are sure to have a good time just being out there. I always enjoy hunting a new state. I have yet to go on a hunt that I couldn't kill at least one. Alabama maybe my first strike out but, I love a challenge.

Congrats, you just jinxed yourself. All kidding aside, all turkeys are not created equal. My experience is that the further north you go, the more vocal the birds are, which can lead to them being easier to kill. Knowing where he's at is half the battle. I think it has to do with the amount of underbrush and their visibility distance. The warmer the climate, the longer the growing season and the thicker the brush. Down here, it's common to hear a lot of gobbling before flydown and then dead silence the rest of the day. I don't think think turkeys are as likely to gobble when they can't see predators approaching. If you can kill an Alabama bird, you can kill one anywhere.

Most people get humbled when they come to the south east from the west or Midwest. Hopefully you will have success.
