So glad to see this thread and for others to share their stories on eagles, hawks, owls, crows and buzzards interacting with turkey's. If you ever get a chance, buy a copy of "Illumination In The Flatwoods" by Joe Hutto. He wrote a daily diary of spending a year w 12 or so eggs that he incubated and when they hatched, they all imprinted on him. He was the Biologist and Lead Forrester for Saint Joe Paper Company and literally took a year off to raise these wild turkey's. Snakes, and birds of prey are mentioned many times. The BBC produced an hour long show that shows the entire year for him. It's a great read and a great video... I think you can find it on you tube as well. It is called a year in the eyes of a wild turkey I believe. I saw the BBC special on PBS. It was really worth watching.

While deer hunting in Coosa county about 15 years ago, I had a drove of hens come by me in a food plot. Suddenly all hell breaks loose and out of nowhere a hawk swoops down and grabs one of the hens by back. Hawk gets her up about 2 feet off the ground and she is flapping and twisting and works herself free. She hits the ground and runs off like a bullet and the hawk flies off with nothing but feathers in it's talons.
Had I not witnessed it, I'd have a hard time believing it. One of the craziest moments I've ever had in nature.

None of these stories surprise me at all. I have seen a bald eagle chasing a fawn through heavy river bottom timber, the fawn was making so much noise then the eagle was screeching and behind the eagle was the mother doe and she was bleating like crazy. I have seen Hawks dive at turkeys, called up coyotes and one time I was next to a field blind calling and dozed off. Only to wake up five minutes later to leaves crunching and face to face with a big bobcat at about 7-10 feet. I don't know who was more surprised, me or the cat! He backed away before I could get a gun up to shoot. And this past Saturday I had my son out in the 27 degree cold morning and had a 2 year old gobbling and what was probably another jake or two coming in to our calling, just when the birds were around the bend of the road, within 70 yards, the birds went silent. I heard them walking off 90 degrees to our right and not a peep out of them. I sat there trying to think of what I did wrong and less than ten minutes a coyote was in the road, right where the birds should have come to, and was staring at my two decoys then he caught a glimpse of my son move his head and turned right around and took off! So I can attest and agree that our Turkeys in Alabama have it rough! From the time they are eggs till their time of death by natural causes, something is trying to kill them! And in most cases the predators are successful! Raccoons, and other egg eaters, then when they are hatched they have cats, coyotes, some places other furred animals and then birds of prey. We as land managers can attempt to curb the coons, cats, coyotes and other fur bearing turkey killers, but our hand are tied and helpless with owls, hawks, Eagles and other protected species!
