Got to my listening spot this morning early and was tucked up in the trees at the bottom of a trail on the edge of a field. I had driven my 4 wheeler in and was about a half mile back in the woods.

I'm standing there and I happen to look back and see a man standing at the top of the hill on the trail. He's by himself in full camo but no gun. My first thought was a trespasser but I grabbed my shotgun and walked up to him. Turns out it was a game warden.

He asked me if I had heard anything and I told him I had not. He asked me for my license and I showed it to him. We made small talk briefly and as he started to walk away he said "oh by the way, I've got the keys to your scooter ( meaning my 4 wheeler) I didn't want somebody walking by to take them."

Best I can tell he must have seen my tracks turn off the paved road and he followed me in. I don't mind checking the license but taking my keys? What if he had not found me and I circled back to my 4 wheeler ready to leave during the hunt? What if I had an emergency and needed to leave. He almost walked away and forgot he had them in his pocket. He essentially was saying your not leaving this place until I check your license.

Anybody else ever have this happen?

You said he was in camo but was he identifiable as a warden and did he show you any ID if he wasn't.

I wouldn't personally take it that way. It sounds to me like he was trying to help you out.

I think you're crazy if you take it any way except the way he took it. You weren't leaving until he found you.

He had a Game Warden hat on. I moved to Montgomery in 1991 and have never been checked until this year and I've been checked twice. Got checked two weeks ago in Lowdnes County. That game warden drove up in his truck and had a badge, gun etc.

Luckily, I always follow the rules and had my license and had recorded my opening day turkey.

Pike County wardens are sneaky. Saw two walking the bottom of a hill I was hunting a few years ago. The next weekend they pulled up the the truck Which was way back off the road as soon as I got back to it.

He could have waited by the 4wheeler if checking a license was his intention. IMO he had no business taking the keys.

Full camo? Sounds like he was there to hunt and was pissed to find you there so it turned into a service call for him....
I know a place in Marengo county where the GW there hunted every property around during the middle of the week during turkey season until he finally got busted and fired....
