It would have been the last time he did something like that if he did it to me. I'd call the sheriff for starters and file a report and if they didn't act on it, I would make a couple of well placed phone calls and that would be the end of that. He had no right to remove your keys from your 4 wheeler. That's illegal seizure. I have a lot of respect for GW's but dayum.
I came, I saw, so I killed them all......Vern

If it was Jinright, you can file all the complaints you want to and make phone calls until your phone lines melt and there won't be a thing done. That guy has been a warden since before I was born.

To OP:
I think the best way to handle a situation like that is probably the way you handled it - respectful and polite.
I wouldn't have approved of him taking my keys, and I certainly wouldn't have approved of him possibly ruining my hunt - but, what's done is done and it wouldn't have served any purpose to confront the man at that time.

Gripe all you want. Whoever gets the complaint will laugh his ass off over it.
A GW is way back in the woods and comes across an ATV with no one around but still has the keys in it. He has no idea if it is stolen or being used by a hunter so he secures the vehicle by taking the keys. Since no one is around to claim the property, it is not an illegal "seizure". Once the owner was found, the keys were returned to him. End of story. It is not illegal to seize lost property. Since there was no owner around, it is lost property until the owner is located.
That is basically how the synopsis of the response to a complaint will read.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

It is not illegal to seize lost property. Since there was no owner around, it is lost property until the owner is located. Is this just for law enforcement? Or can anyone just take the keys? Being it's lost property and all....

Being it's lost property and all.... Exactly especially if it was private land. Everything on that land is mine. He shouldn't be able to take a rock, a flower, tree stands , tractor keys.... My tree stands and shooting houses are on my land all the time. If I'm not around to claim them does that mean they are lost property? Does anyone have a right to steal, I mean claim them?

I know many are suggesting I file a complaint and I have thought about it. However, at the end of the day there is just enough wiggle room and interpretation for it not to go anywhere and the last thing I want is a pissed off game warden who knows right where we hunt.
I've always bent over backwards to be courteous and respectful to any law enforcement officer I encounter. Theirs is a job I appreciate but could never do myself. I can't understand why the GW knowing where you hunt would be a problem. The local GW has a key to land I lease, and land I own. I gave it to him. Did this guy walk in?
