Are we sure he had no gun? If he didn't then he wasn't a GW nor is he much of a hunter, unless he rings their necks, in which case he is a heck of a hunter.
OP, you don't have to file a complaint, but you need to check with the district supervisor to make sure he is a GW. If he isn't, and it sounds an awful lot like he isn't, he committed a felony and the officials need to know about it before someone gets hurt. It's crazy, but some nuts get their rocks off doing stuff like that. I thought you were the guy telling him to forget it??

I never have taken the keys out of my Jeep regardless of where I'm at. At home, dollar store, private property,Skyline I mean never. Would the GW have the right to open the door and take my keys out on Skyline? I figure that's what I pay Alfa for if someone steals it. . Next time I see your Jeep in the woods somewhere I'm gonna move it a couple hundred yards. That is the only reason I take the keys out of my junk when I park in the woods. I know my buddies would drive off in it and leave me to walk home.

[quote=jawbone]Bill, I say this with all sincerity, if an officer in my area found an abandoned ATV (no one with it) and didn't do something to investigate further, considering that ATV theft is an epidemic in my area, he would not be considered to be doing his job. Even during hunting season, an ATV alone in the woods warrants further looking into. I leave the key in mine and it would probably perturb me if a GW took the keys, but I go back to my original point that he was only doing his job and sometimes we don't like it and it is intrusive. As long as there are limits to it, we'll have to live with it. I don't like when I go through a roadblock, but I have to live with it. I absolutely despise red light cameras because they go against my ethical training in LE, but I have to live with them. All I was doing, or trying to do not to well apparently was to point out why complaining in this case is pointless. I will contend until the cows come home that the courts would not have a problem with the GW taking keys from an ATV with no one around if he has a reasonable explanation. If anyone disagrees, you'll just have to disagree. Going to cut grass now that it is finally dry. [/quote
This is the biggest crock of chit. Its darn turkey season ATVs are parked all over the darn woods. HE HAS ZERO RIGHT to remove the KEYS period without Probable cause ( not the BS probable cause of a "stolen 4 wheeler" youi are stating) of a CRIME being commited.
In fact..what he did was theft..the removal of property without the owner permission!
My degrees in law..that is a crock and would never stand up as probable cause..period!

My horse is not a Virgin anymore. Just saying. Keys are gone too.
Life is a journey. Make sure and bring plenty of Beer.
My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

I would really like to see his explanation of proable cause. He thought the 4 wheeler was stolen? really? thats what youre going with? THE THIEF HAD THE KEYS TOO????? REALLY? If it was stolen the ignition would be ripped out. Thieves dont steal the darn keys too. That argument has NO LOGIC and would hold NO MERIT!
A straw argument..being made to defend a fellow LEO...which I understand..but baseless and not grounded in fact.
It would NEVER hold up in a court of law.

Has anyone even questioned the "why would the GW possibly compromise the hunt, without probable cause of any kind" scenario?
I've read what the OP wrote - what if he had roosted a bird, parked strategically, walked close to the bird way before daylight, to get to a likely fly down spot. I've done it and go in early. And then as light starts coming, there's a GW.
Now that is bush league!!

I know a fireman who flashed his badge to a hunter who was hunting our property line that borders the National Forest. He said the guy left the area. I think he threatened him with trespassing and hunting with out a permit.

If he didn't say anything and only presented his fire badge, not much could come from it.
