There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games.

Depends. Hunting in alabama = NO, elk hunting at 12000' = yes And to those that don't think golfers are athletes I disagree completely. When I playing in college, we practiced 7 days a week, which included 3-5 18 hole rounds while carrying a golf bag and walking up to 7 miles per day. On top of that I hit up to a 1000 range balls per day. Now at 36 I have 4 herniated disc because of it.

Considering it takes hours and hours of physical training to do it, yes. Some NASCAR drivers workout really hard, some don't at all. Nobody shows up and places or wins a powerlifting meet without putting in hours of physical training. To me, the physical preparation is what sets athletes apart from competitors. If you can show up to an event, competition, game, match without preparing yourself physically then you're not an athlete. Not athletes. Neither are bowlers, archers, poker players. I suppose you think weight lifters are? If it's a classified as a sport, the participants are athletes in my eyes. Poker isn't a sport, so I agree with you there. If you don't believe archers are athletes, get out there and try shooting a few competitions.

Which brings me back to my statement. If you don't think archers are athletes, go out and give it a try. To be competitive and stay competitive , it take hours and hours of training, both mentally and physically. Since my treestand accident, I've had to give it up because I can't hold out physically to train like I used to. Which in turn, caused my performance to suffer.

If you can show up to a game without preparing yourself physically then you're not an athlete. So what your really saying is that Bama players are not athlete.

hand/eye coordination and endurance make them world-class athletes. let's see: 43 at nascar's highest level; 25 or so at indycar; 40 or so in F1; no idea of how many many top rally drivers, maybe 40 or so; maybe 100 motorcycle/motocross riders. 250 or so worldwide at the highest level. i would reckon a good percentage could be word class tennis or baseball players with that kind of hand/eye coordination and wrist quickness/strength ...

Wtf? Who of the current 43 drivers would be "world class baseball players"? It's too early to be drinking. hand/eye coordination and endurance make them world-class athletes. let's see: 43 at nascar's highest level; 25 or so at indycar; 40 or so in F1; no idea of how many many top rally drivers, maybe 40 or so; maybe 100 motorcycle/motocross riders. 250 or so worldwide at the highest level. i would reckon a good percentage could be word class tennis or baseball players with that kind of hand/eye coordination and wrist quickness/strength ...

I bet you a lot more than the other way around. I love nascar guys, but it is not an athletic sport. How many baseball players or tennis players could be a NASCAR driver? I would guess 0.

Here is how I qualify an athlete. If it is a sport, where you must be abnormally gifted physically, you are an athlete. If it is a sport, where you can bust your azz, work hard, and earn your abilities, then you are a professional.
Football, not everybody can be a nfl caliber player, no matter how much effort they put in.
Nascar, a huge chunk of it, is how much time and effort you put in, along with your connections.
