I didnt want hijack dnolens thread but I am curious if anyone else does any trail running.I have ran a couple of local 10k trail runs and I did a 9.3 miler at Montesano State Park back in early Jan.I did my first half marathon (road) a few weeks ago in Nashville and now I'm kinda thinking about a half trail run in Chattanooga in Aug.Not sure if I can pull that one off yet.Anyway, just curious if anyone else punishes their late 40's body(or whatever age) just to see if you can finish something you set your mind too.

Distance running and trail running can be addictive - at least that is what I my trail running friends tell me. I run 5 or 6 days a week from mid-May to early November. Most of my miles are on the road except for the summer cross country runs at John Hunt park. I guess you can consider that a trail, but it is a not fun one. The rest of the year I try run 3 days a week.

I don't race much anymore because most of the good races are either during deer or turkey season. The longest races I do anymore are the Cotton Row 10k and Hellen Keller 5 mi. I have ran a 1 mi, 10k, and half-marathon in a 36 hr period (Friday night, Saturday morning, and Sunday morning). It sucked in real-time and in hindsight, so I don't feel compelled to do any other longer distance just to say I did it. But I do enjoy running just to run.

I've done a couple 5k trail runs. I volunteered at one this past weekend. I was just starting to really get into running when I broke my leg. I hope to get back into it when I'm released to start running again.

dnolen, sign up for the 5K and just go do it. Walk, jog, whatever. Just go do it and complete it or maybe sign up with your wife. Y'all might get hooked on it. The 5K and 10K events are kind of addictive.

I've considered the trail running because we have so many good trails around here with Monte Sano and Guntersville state parks and our H'sv Land Trust. Still looking into it. Almost did one in early February up in Tennercee but opted out.

Of course, when we were kids we called trail running "playing outside" and usually built a "fort" or something else.

Signed up for the Cotton Row 10K in two weeks. I'd like to get under an hour but doubt I will.

What kind of trail running shoes do y'all use? Regular sneaks or something like from Salomon with some big luggy treads?

I was up to 5mi a day until my close friend that never leaves me came to visit[plantar fasciitis]. Now I am doing good to get a half mile in every other day.I was addicted to it and felt like my day wasn't complete without my evening run.

Plantar is treatable. I had it about 12-13 years ago and saw an ortho. Cortisone shots, shoe inserts, wider shoes, stretching all helped. No problems since.

We have been trying everything[my doctor and I]but she won't do cortisone shots because of my diabetes.Merrel shoes have been my only saving grace so far.I never thought a shoe could make so much difference.

I didn't either until about 2 years ago when I could barely walk and thought I had a durn tumor or something under my right foot pad b/t first and second toe. Turns out my shoes were too narrow and pinching, and now I have a hammer toe to go with the mild arthritis in my big toe joint.

Ortho said to go up a size in shoes and/or go with wide ones so my toes could expand normally. Most folks don't, especially women, and have cramped, sore, bunion/callous/bone problems but they don't want to admit they need a size up.

Big feet big..... does that apply to women also rofl. That may be why they don't wanna go up a size.I know I don't have a problem with going in and asking for a size 14 grin

Better shoes do make a difference. Kinda like getting a crappy scope or boots for hunting and wondering why your feet are cold or the scope doesn't work as well in dim light.

I run about 15 miles per week nowadays, don't do any races anymore (just lost interest, no other reason). I live about 3 miles from the Coldwater Mountain trail system in Anniston, so I run there about once per week on average, usually just 2 or 3 miles, but every once in a blue moon I'll do a longer loop (have done up to 10 miles). I have trail run in regular shoes, but I like a genuine trail shoe better. Right now I street run in Altra Torin 1.5's, and I am trail running in Altra Lone Peak 2.0's. If my $.02 is worth anything, the zero drop shoes are awesome, all should try.

What's the symptons of plantar fasciitis? I think he may be visiting me too.

I ran 3-5 days a week before my kids were born. I ran the full Mercedes in 2012 as a grand fanally(spelling?). I havnt ran much since, but still lift 3 days a week. The marathon was a bucket list thing. I doubt I ever do a full again, but a half would be fun.

I tried on some Hokas when I got my last shoes. They don't make wide shoes yet, so I went with a pair of Brooks glycerin 12s. I have worn new balance, Nike, and Saucony. The saucony ride 7s where my favorite until I got the Brooks.

I run 3-5 miles everyday. But, I am to slow to run a race. I only run about a 10 minute mile.

Scott, that's a 30-minute 5K. Nothing wrong with that at all. Hell, I can't even break 33 minutes. So, you're not too slow. Sign up for one and go do it.
