We just lost our family dog this past week. We've been pretty tore up about, especially my boys. My youngest is ready for a new pup, so we've been checking around and reading up a little. We are leaning toward a basset hound since my wife has always wanted one. Yall educate me on them to help us make a decision.

great dogs.. I have killed a pile of deer and rabbits in front of one. Make a good yard dog for sure. Heck of a blood trail dog also.. Can't go wrong with one Shane...

Not so great as an inside dog. Have to be bathed every couple of days or else your whole house will smell like old, nasty dog.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

We had a Basset when I was younger. Loved that dog and his ears. Just keep in mind that those big ass ears are for smelling...and they will take that joker a long way from your house! I'm a sucker for a hound though (still miss my redbone), but just keep in mind that a basset is a big ass dog with little legs that likes to go far! They don't know the word stop or stay, but I would suggest getting one!

It seems like I have been plagued with living beside someone over the years everywhere I have lived that owns a basset.Everyone of them have been very loving dogs but dang they can eat.I think they must have as big a stomach as a St.Bernard.The drawback that stands out the most is everyone of the ones I have been close to have a habit of just sitting out in the middle of the yard at night and barking at nothing.I mean absolutely nothing.

Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life;of whom shall I be afraid?

Depends on what you want one for...Buddy of mine has one thats a damn good blood dog...and he sleeps in bed with him...but like whats been said you gotta bathe them a lot...they smell like corn chips:)

If its just an inside / outside buddy you want...Go Schnauzer...

Y'all are all too funny about the smell. We have had one and tons of beagles and like ALL hounds they have a smell. But I don't think its a bad smell and if any dog is going to be in the house you will have to bathe it! right? Plus if your wife is anything like me....If she wants it, she won't gripe about the maybe a little extra bath here and there work.

Had one for 10 years loved her. She was house broken. Taught her how to sit, and she would halfway fetch. She would start to smell if she didn't get a bath for awhile, or you didn't keep her ears cleaned out.Very playful, and mild tempermant. Bassets are as active as you will let them be. We bought our son one last November, and have no complaints. She is housebroken, and plays well with our son. My advice is to get a female, they seem to listen better than males.

My Grandparents always had Bassett hounds in the house. They were awsome dogs and VERY mild tempered. I'm sure we terrorized them as kids, but they never snapped or growled.

They have a mouth on them and will bay or tree anything thats around, and I promise you will know it. I think they are one of the coolest dogs there is.

We had are basset put down in February. Great dog, he was house trained and stayed inside. My son pulled his ears, poked mine in the eyes once , rode him like a horse he never tried to bite him. He would watch our kids when he was outside with them. He was a rescue from BHRA in Birmingham.

One lives next door. It barks continuously when the neighbors are gone. They had to get a bark collar for it.

Well, the battery is dead, and they are gone. My study is next too their house. Needless to write, it has been barking non stop.

Texted neighbor, and he had someone come sit with the Bassett, to keep him quite. He had to order the battery, as it is a special type, and hopefully will be here this week.

This is my experience with Bassett hounds.

God Bless,
David B.

Believe me you do not want a Bassett hound. Oh they are cute and all but they are a lot of trouble. If you want a loyal and loving dog get a Border Collie. I have owned all kind of dogs and have trained labs for computation and they are wonderful dogs but they chew on everything. Get you a border collie I promise you will not be disappointed.

My sister had one and it stunk all the time but it was an outside dog. Smelled like a LSU fan. Week old corndogs that have been sitting in the sun for a couple of weeks. Good dog though.

I grew up with Bassett hounds. They smell horrible, hard as heck to housebreak, are stubborn till the day they die, and chew a lot. That being said though, our dog max was one of the best dogs we ever owned. They can be a pain but are good dogs.
