going to the AKC about Mal dogs is kind of like going to the KKK about how to join the NAACP.....Mals are a European breed that AKC has tried to mash into the "American" way of breeding dogs. And we know how that has worked for the German Shepherd Dog breed.... That can be true, but not always. I've worked with a European breed, Norwegian Elkhounds, for 18 years through the AKC and national parent club. The parent club writes and sets the standard, not the AKC. The AKC breed standard is what the national parent club sets and dictates. Not the other way around. If the national parent club shifts and starts to "Americanize" the breed, as they did with the GSD...then bad things happen. What has happened to the GSD is a travesty. Other breeds without a national parent club that has good vision and a since of tradition, can and do change the standard from what it once was. When power players inside these national clubs decide to change the look, it goes downhill fast. A good national club will always focus on form, function and temperament equally to keep the breed standard at a high bar.

straycat, problem is the Mals are a European breed and the AKC decides to set the standards for that breed using American breeding logic. Like American breeders haven't ruined a lot of good breeds already. Buddy of mine had a German import that AKC wouldn't register because they said it didn't meet breed standards, that would be funny if it wasn't so sad. An American club telling a German breed what their dogs should be..... European breeders lean towards a performance standard whereas Americans care more about how it looks.....

The police dogs the department I worked at bought mals. They came from a trainer in Texas. One of the handlers told me one time he buys a bunch from Europe and starts them. He then only keeps the most promising to finish and sells the rest as guard dogs/pets. Don't know if I'd want a pet that was started as a badass dog and then quit.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.
