CNC... I have seen this concept work on small properties with a good size plot in the middle and a house set up for the right wind. You just have to have the will power to stay away till the rut. You might only hunt it once or twice.

one 8 point I had last year for over 3 months daily had his picture taken 1 mile away on the same day I would have him. I saw a collared doe one morning while hunting cutover and it was standing in our next door neighbors camp at lunch time 4 miles away waiting on him to show up to feed corn (he has about 100 deer that come up in his yard after he feeds). I called him that afternoon to told him i had seen her on our property that morning around 830-9 am and he said well she was at my camp at 1130 when i got there.
Give me bout 15 more minutes, I was dreamin about beavers.......... Si Robertson

CNC... I have seen this concept work on small properties with a good size plot in the middle and a house set up for the right wind. You just have to have the will power to stay away till the rut. You might only hunt it once or twice. I think having a good sized food plot is one key. If someone had a small plot of less than an acre then you would be limited as to the effect it would have. Deer have to have food as the winter drags on and without ample amounts of it, does are just not going to be able to concentrate like that on one small area. You might be able to offset this though by adding feeders in other areas of the property. The fewer the resources from a feeding and bedding perspective then the fewer does you’ll be able to concentrate. They start becoming aggressive with one another when a bunch of different doe groups begin to concentrate on a limited amount of food and/or bedding. There seems to be a cap on what my one little setup will hold. I actually think it’s more dictated by the bedding being full rather than limited food. To keep this on topic since we’re hi-jacking a little……One of the main points being made is that doe groups will lock down on an area at certain times of the year and travel will be virtually nill……IF they have the conditions and resources to do so. If you ever watch any of the survival shows then that is how I picture the doe’s mentality. They are first and foremost “survivalists”. The females are not going to do any more than they just have to in order to survive. The ideal location for them is where they have good cover and ample food in very close proximity to one another. If they have that and are left undisturbed….you’ll see does staying in circles smaller than 100 acres. I sometimes wonder if these does here on my property do ANYTHING other than walk out 50-200 yards from my plot…..lay down and chew cud…..then get back up…get a drink of water and walk back to the plot. They seem to never leave.

I get the impression that deer aren't pelagic like this in other parts of the country. I have no first-hand knowledge of it, but when you watch hunting shows on TV they basically see the same bucks in the same field every evening for the whole season.

They are all individuals. It also depends on what time of year it is, Summer, most of them not far. During rut, some not far, some several miles. No one size fits all when it comes to bucks. Ya'll need to read Dr. Mark Connor's findings on the buck movement study he did on Chesapeake Farms. Better yet hear him speak on it, best seminar I ever heard and I've heard quite a few. Above you will find a very short Cliff Notes version. BTW, while doing the tracking , they saw quite a bit of hunter/stand avoidance. Bucks doing a horse shoe around stands just out of sight of hunters.

I just prefer studies done in a more local deer herd. I always find myself looking at a study done elsewhere and wondering if the local deer act and react the same. A LOT of studies have been done in Texas that I have read. For selfish reasons I wish all studies where done in Alabama!!

I would too, but as far as I know none like Dr. Connor did have been done in the Heart of Dixie. Bet $ , ours would act similar. I know some do.
