First lets look at the hook you are using...You should be using somewhere in the neighborhood of a 5/0 widegap hook. Next thing is the line you are using.. Big hooks require heavy # test line to drive the hook home...and that leads us to the type rod as well you need a good stiff rod to drive the hook into the fishes mouth. The thing with topwater lures is that bass will sometimes explode on it, but never take it. Instead they slash at it then sit back and look at the lure. If you get a blowup try and resist the urge to set the hook right off the bat....wait till you feel tension then drive the hookset home. If it blows up and you still see your frog setting there let it sit for 5 to 10 secs then ever so gently twitch it and that almost always elicits a strike. Follow the advice I've given you and you will hook more fish with the grass frogs. Guntersville lake has been the perfect teacher for me in learning the hard way. Good luck on the water!!!
If you’re a common sense person, you probably don’t feel you have a home in this world right now. If you’re a Christian, you know you were never meant to.

I agree with ICOT. The hardest thing to do when that water boils is to be patient in setting the hook. You may be trying to set it to quickly. You might also consider using a braided line if you are not already, there is no stretch in the line, when you set it, it is there. I have had bass explode on a topwater lure but miss it completely. Let is set idle for a few seconds and then jerk it, they will often strike again.
There is nothing more fun than topwater when they are hitting it. I just wish they would hit it all day as opposed to just early morning or late afternoons.
