I wish someone with more genetic knowledge than me would post on the subject (Steve! :o) but to my knowledge, there is no genetic component to right vs left antler characteristics. As I understand it, genetics does not work like that.

What is a SOOS buck?

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

I read an article one time that attributed a lot of SOOS issues to some form of pedicle damage. However, in some areas that's way too many deer with SOOS for them to have all injured/bumped there heads. Also, I have no long term data to back it up but it sometimes seems that SOOS bucks have a hard time recovering from this pedicle damage (multiple years still a SOOS). I'm sure there are some pedicle damaged deer, but in some areas it just leaves you wondering.

1) South Mathews soil subtype changes to a slightly sandier less fertile soil
2) more timber in the south so higher population densities/ more competition for browse
3) more pressure from the heavier timbered properties. A lot of north Mathews is a mix of pastures, woods, and houses.

I would speculate the same things you mentioned. Plus I think there are fewer 6 and 7 point antler genetics in north Matthews.

I also wonder this: in Texas where QDM was invented back in the 1970s all those big ranches started to try to manage their deer herds for superior antler traits. I recall that they were (and still are) trying to get deer herds where the majority of bucks grow 10 points, so these ranches would aggressively cull bucks.

Without getting into the debate about free range deer herds and antlers, does anyone know of any reports or studies on the results there? It has been going on for decades and it seems the deer study groups at the major universities and the deer magazines would have reported on this, but I don't recall ever reading anything about results there.

Genetics cannot be influenced to any significant degree in a free ranging herd. Mickey Hellickson tried it on the King Ranch and used two almost identical areas (so as to have a control subject) and tried for I think almost ten years with no measurable result.

"Genetics" and "culls" ar the number one excuse used by people without trigger finger control or a lack of willingness to do the work necessary for true habitat improvement. Just my own observations. YMMV.
