I would say it is fairly accurate in several places I have hunted. But when I hunt now in Fayette/Lamar on each side of the county line it is a little off. The rut in that area is late December early January.

There will be changes to that map. There are some areas in Fayette/Lamar with a consistent mid to late December peak breeding season. You know where that is.

I've hunted hard all my life in Lamar, Fayette, and Pickens county, and I can say with 100% certainty that it changes from year to year. The week of Christmas and the first week of January have always been the best two weeks for us, but I've seen and killed deer chasing in November all the way up to January 31st. One of the first years I bow hunted by myself I saw an 8 point chase a doe all around a clearcut on Halloween. If I had to pick one week it would be the last week of the year for me.

Bibb county is right with the map from what I have experienced over the past 10 years. Scrapes start showing up around Dec 15th and it is on thru New Year's.

The aon map has us in a late January rut but we are actually late December to early January.

Same for us. I've always read, and it makes sense, that a healthy buck to doe ratio makes for a short and intense rut… where as too many does and not enough bucks will result in 2 and maybe even 3 breeding periods. That being said, I think our ratio is pretty good and while we typically do see a pretty intense rut (chasing, fighting, a lot of rubs, scrapes, etc.) it's not uncommon to see a bucks chasing around opening weekend and then again in late January. My theory is there are some does that come in earlier and come in later as a result of the restocking program and having different genetics.

I believe it's does that were not bred the first time coming back in and doe fawns coming in for the first time are the ones being chased in January. Some of the biggest bucks I've killed were chasing tiny does in January down that way.

I will say this... I have shot deer on SEVERAL properties when the hunters say the rut is for sure "x"- " x" and after pulling fetuses out of several does the peak date be over a month different. Often the hunters/landowners are as surprised as we are and sometimes they are dead on.

Would like to see statewide buck only until March 1st with current three deer limit. Why? Not just rut, but some years the weather tends to be better during that period. I have seen public hunts when a majority of open dates for rifle season is not good hunting weather and they don't add hunts that year if the weather is bad. Do you think it would decrease population that much?

That map isn't accurate for the area I live in (south Marshall county) and the area my club is in (southeast Blount county)

Both areas rut in very late January.

Saw an article on a study a few months ago said the lock down phase is not near as long as people think. As I remember 24 hours was about the longest period with any one doe for a buck. Lot more, wham bam thank you ma'am going on. Many twin fawns have different fathers. It had to be in Quality Whitetail Mag. or North American Whitetail as those are the only two I get. Anyone else read it? BTW , I believe them to be correct. Never bought into a lot of that phase stuff myself.

That old buck always looking for another once he finds the first good one. He may be walking himself to death for weeks or all month long looking for that next available momma. Could be months if he finds one that came in early and then some late. All about timing.
